SB Owners, what is your next CPU upgrade?

Just curious what SB owners are looking to jump to. I myself don't foresee needing a CPU upgrade for many years, but that doesn't mean I won't.

I'm probably going to be patient on IvyBridge see which processor enthusiasts like and find a good deal and jump on one. SB could probably still fetch me most of my $ back anyhow.

Either a lateral (performance-wise) shift from my current i3-2100 simply for the increased power efficiency, or possibly a step up if I can get a lot more performance for not a whole lot more wattage and I feel like spending money on something I don't need (i.e. more performance than necessary).

Maybe it would be interesting to see the results of two polls:

1. Desktop users, what will be your CPU after Sandy Bridge?
2. Laptop users, what will be your CPU after Sandy Bridge?

My guess is that the upgrade path for Laptop would be more aggressive.

Ivy Bridge. It fits on my board and my 2600K doesn't overclock to well with moderate voltage.

SB will serve me well for at least another year or beyond.
Unless there is a deal to good to pass up then I may upgrade to IB.

Ivy. I'm intending to pop my SB processor into a test server when Ivy comes out and reuse everything else on my board. Seems the most cost effective solution for me right now. Or that's what I'm telling myself to justify the new proc.

Interesting, early results show people mostly stick with either mainstream or enthusiast platforms. Not much jumping back and forth. I myself voted for Haswell. It would be terrific if SB lasted me thru two GPU upgrades.

Sandy Bridge With a 2600K OCed ,, you will never use full 100 percent CPU power during games,,, more like 60 percent avg. Soo why upgrade CPU ? Also the difference in performance from a sandy to Ivy is slim. You will not notice a difference. What do you do on your comp that you need this. ? Video editing with Adobe Premiere, Sony Vegas or ? Or are you running a DAW with Sonar ? Even if you did these things the Sandy with 8 core after HT is enough. Your next upgrade should be when they increase the CPU count in the chip. 8 core or 12 core desktops.. gl

I would only upgrade if I needed the performance increase. That being said, going from SB to IB is not going to be huge / massivly noticable so an increase from SB would have me going back to server gear / dual cpus.

Unless Haswell sucks. There is precedent for Intel to make not so great processors.

Of course I don't ***need*** Ivy (sheesh - my SB is just ridiculous) but it looks like an easy upgrade. First one in a long time for me.

No one counts on it. Do you think Intel expected iAPX 432, i860, netburst, Itanium to be so underwhelming?

Of course, you completely missed my point. Those were all in the Craig Barrett Age, post Andy Grove. You know, when Intel actually sucked. Intel has executed for a substantial period of time, and I wouldn't bet against them until there's another major management change.

Haswell, hell maybe even Broadwell. Don't see a 2600K being a bottleneck for gaming anytime soon.

I think I'm good for a while -- will probably do one or two GPU upgrades and wait for Haswell to show up.
