SB Live Platnium 5.1 major problems need help desperatly

I had a sb live value without 5.1 before. I tried to
upgrade the card to my sb live platinum 5.1 with ir
drive, but I didn't install the ir drive yet, I just
wanted the card working first. At first i couldn't eve
get the computer to load into windows. Now I have the
driver installed and device manager tewlls me evrythign
is fine, but no mixer comes up for sound options. When I
go to multimedia and device manager I go to mixer it
shows me status: driver isenabled but inactive due to an
unknown problem. So I can'r get any sound whatsoever even
though windows says the device is working propoerly. The
driver date is 8-25-2000
any help wuld be apreciated

Troubleshooting Steps Performed Thus Far:

retsrting, changing pci slots, disabling sb 16 emulation.
changing driver, which only causes the computer not to
boot up and forcing me to get rid of them in safe mode.
uninstalling all traces of the drivers, and then reinstalling- causes a freeze when i restart windows

 
That card does not play well with VIA drivers. Post some specs like OS, Mobo, etc.
 
i am using win 98se
ASUS A7V266
AMD 1700 XP
WD 120.0 GB @ 7200 RPMS
PNY Ti 4400 128mb

there doesn't seem to be any conflcits with irqs and such.. but I can't firgure it out for the life of me.. any help would be apreciated
 
keep the sound card (and all cards for that matter) out of pci slots 4 and 6, the second to last slot on that board would be the best placement, then install the latest via 4 in 1's, and the newest sb drivers from creatives website.
 
i messed around with the drivers some more, and now i new screen.. windows protection doesn't let me boot into windows and asks that i reboot.. i reboot and go into safe mode. I then have to dlete al files connected with the card and restart
 
I've been getting those protection faults too recently, still tryin to figure out how to fix them (what I gathered from microsoft knowlege base was it is either hardware or software, they have a checklist on how to determine which and how to "fix" it)knowlegebase
 
well i reformated .. stil no go.. a starnage problemn tho.. at times my video goes away and it seems that the computer restarted , but if I press ener a couple of times there it shows my desktop. But this happens for example when I change a setting involved with the soundcard. for example if i change the setting on multimedia for playback of perferred device to sblive the screen goes black, and i have to press enter a cople of times ot fix it, and then i check the settings, and nothign has benn changed.. so anyone have any insight to this.???
 
a new problem after messing around some more
now i get my spundcard with a ! in device ,manager

ASD says this is the problem in my registry it seems... now if anyone could help me
