SB Live not so good...

I got an SB Live! Value to replace a MX300 and I am getting more and more convinced the SB sucks compared to the vortex. The sounds (in NFSPU) are delayed about half a second and EAX is really bad! You get only a little reverb completely uncoordinated with whatever is happening. I don't know if there is some problem here, but I have been using it for a few weeks (granted, with some video card hicups in between...), used different drivers, different directX, and still get the same exact problems. Please, someone prove me wrong!

Make sure you have liveware3 this is better then liveware2 ,you can customise all the sounds plus when I installed my card was only getting 2 speaker support you have to setup how many speakers you have in audio HQ under speakers,I dont know if this will improve the sound quality but tweaking the software to match your setup is not a bad thing to do.Use the latest drivers as well.

One last thing check your IRQ settings I had SBLIVE,Geforce2 MX both using IRQ11,which gave me slight delay in sound so I changed SBlive to IRQ10,at the end of the day you may prefer the sound from your MX300 over the SBlive.

Yup. I have never heard a mx300, but I have an SQ2500 and the only advantage that a SBLive has over the SQ2500 is the Liveware software. Vortex2 is far superior in games and, in the case of my SQ2500, is so close in mp3's and other audio outputs that their is no noticeable difference. Again I'll re-iterate, for music the Liveware software is mondo cool, wish my SQ2500 had an equivalent.

Man, SB Live sucks so bad. I can't stand my card. I threw the vortex into the other PC because all it had in there was a lame PCI sound card, so at least the MX300 wouldn't be any worse. I use Windows 2000 way too much though to use the Vortex card. I couldn't even get the joystick port to work under w2k so that was the last straw.

For games, dear god, EAX is gay.

After trying both, I cannot wait for better w2k drivers to come out for the vortex, if ever.

Thank you Shudder! I didn't want to get to aggressive about how much it sucks, but obviously I am not the only one. What really makes me sad about all this is that once again the superior technology is crushed by the big fish in the pond! I might try my luck with the MX300 again. I was having problems also in win2k, but since I got rid of it (didn't really need it at home...)

If Windows 2000 wasn't so good compared to 98 or ME, I'd go back to WinME just for A3D support. And there's no need to feel bad about hating EAX. 🙂 It simply does not sound as good as A3D. Ooooh. Echoes. Big whoop. Maybe I'll just use both cards and play Thief in WinME 🙂

I'm sure now that Creative is pretty set with Aureal, we'll see some A3D/EAX hybrids that only cost about 200 bucks.

Anyone happen to know of any hack drivers for A3D and Windows 2000?

I'm using an MX300 too, and another advantage it has over the SB Live! is that it has a wavetable daughterboard connector so I can still use my Yamaha DB50XG...
btw what exactly is liveware?

I've gone from a MX300 to a Sound blaster Live! and I like the SBL better. When Playing music and such, it just sounds so much cleaner to me.
But hey, it might just be me. 😛
