Hi there,
Well I installed my new Soundblaster Audigy card last night which went very smoothly.

I also installed FireNet (I have no idea why I did this!) and that is where I think things went wrong....

After installation I can connect to the internet (ISP server) but cannot view any webpages or do anything at all with my connection - I'm still using a simple 56k dial up connection. This includes yahoo messenger, MSN messenger Outlook, etc etc...anything that uses the network..:(

Anybody have any tips to resolve this - it is so long since I had to fiddle around with protocols and TCP/IP etc that I have forgotten what on earth I should be doing to rectify this problem....

Thanks in advance

Try to uninstall it. I had a similar crap - but my program caused conflict was caused by modem manager proggie. Had same crap, so i just uninstalled it. Yes, and by the way, NOTHING can improve the speed of dial-up (trust me, theres tons of crap ive tried), just leave it be. I was using dialup for ages, and will still use it for some time.

Problem solved....nothing that I have ever seen before was the cause too!!!

I had to go into the registry and copy and import the settings (saved to a floppy disk) from my second PC into this primary PC.

And here we are back online again :)

It was the Winsock and Winsock2 registry entries that had become corrupted or suchlike - as I said at the start - I've never seen this problem ever before - glad that my trusty Win ME is well again (I never have trouble with ME) :D

Why installing the Audigy caused this problem I have no idea but I think it was my fault for installing the FireNet software. If this is not the case somebody let me know. I think that somehow the Audigy corrupted the registry settings for the Winsock entries and would allow me to connect to my ISP but not use the connection. I'm baffled by it!

I'm just bloody happy it is solved - I was fearing a format and re-install :(

I was using a 1.5mbps ADSL connection in Hong Kong from 1998 until 2001 when I came over to the USA. I've used 56K ever since.

To be honest 56k is fine for browsing - it is only for file sharing and online gaming that you really "need" a broadband connection. I simple won't entertain paying $45-50 a month for AOL/Time Warner. A 6-10mpbs connection in HK nowadays is way under $30 a month!

I pay $5.95 a month for Access4Less which is an unlimited connection - it is a great service and have been 100% satisfied with the service (highly recommended) - I'm moving to Canada at the end of the month though and will need to change though.

Thanks for your response though :)

To be honest I surprised myself there ;)

I forgot to say another reason I did not go Broadband over here is because I used to be a complete Counter Strike Addict...........each and every night for hours on end....
