Yeah, the taxes will suck, but I was prepared for them. The complete moving package is the sign-on bonus that really attracted me, the 3 estimates we've gotten show that it's going to cost them about $16k to move us to NY, and that doesn't include the storage fees and temporary housing that they'll pay until we find a permanent home. I can't complain at all at this point.

Wow that's a lot of relo for a staff level position....you sure you're going to get all that relo back? You better get it on paper.
I've got the written job offer in hand. And it's not a reimbursement, they're paying the moving company directly. I'm out of the loop, all I do is sign that the house was packed properly and unpacked properly. In my business, I&C Techs are considered to be a prized commodity, especially if they can do controls work, so this is not an uncommon offer.

consider this a blessing from the gods that you escaped the training, the mark VI is really the mark 666. :D
lol, yeah it wasn't a lot of fun to learn about. But it's just a different DCS with TMR added on and a new HMI.

It's an IPP named AES. Heard of them?

Thanks for all the replies guys.

If it weren't for the family situation I'd say you're making a financial mistake. However, it's a no brainer with all the familial support. Good luck!

Shoot a few road signs on the way out. For extra points, shoot through the bullet holes already there!

I'll be living close to Geneva, about 40 minutes SW of Rochester. I was born in Canandaigua and love the area.

Geneva is 40 minutes southeast of Rochester :p Fantastic area. There's a college town and outlet mall nearby.

Not to mention Hillary! ;)

Hillary doesn't really live here. Hell, she probably hasn't even visited in several years.

Say goodbye to Texas and freedom, say hello to New York and 6% state income tax.

Texas freedom? :laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

Yeah right

Just because you live in our punk little brother to the North doesn't mean you have to hate, Dave.

dave never contributes anything useful, just ignore him (even though it's hard).

Oh I know, I just don't want him thinking it went unnoticed that he lives in Oklahoma, Texas' ditzy younger sister.

That's a Six Flags now, right?

At least it is owned by Six Flags. I thought Great Escape is near Saratoga though. The Finger Lakes are still quite a drive from that part of NY.

What a day so far. Plant management is really upset. I knew they wouldn't be happy but this is just completely unexpected. This is the hardest resignation I've ever done.

Wegmans is the only thing I miss from upstate NY. I love Weggies.

I used to live in Syracuse. Got tired of the snow, so I moved south to VA. Yank by birth, Reb by choice. I love the south.

Sounds like his job couldn't have come at a better time with him basically getting evicted (due to no fault of his).

Megatomic for NY State Governor! Or at least some really cool neighborhood watch position. :D

I'm Sure he was just bring home free electricity from work :D

Rochester probably isn't too bad, but heat is going to be a killer. I thought it was bad a few years ago when fuel oil was $2/gal, now it's $4/gal, that just sucks.

Good luck on the new job though.

This, plus the state sales tax = yikes!

How are NY State's gun laws compared to New York City's gun laws? I.E. in the latter, you can't own so much as a BB rifle legally.

I lived in south Texas for 10 years and it was awesome. I had a nice little collection of legally purchased firearms and shot them as much as possible. Everyone in my neighborhood had the same type of collection and nobody's house EVER got broken into.

Living in NYC during the Dinkins holocaust of the 1980's I saw that literally only the outlaws had guns. Too many innocent people getting mugged/murdered. Home invasions, etc.

NYC sucks ass. It's gotten a lot better (been there twice in the past year) but it's still way too restrictive.

That said, "upstate" (the other 99% of NY state) is BEAUTIFUL. Four distinct seasons, fresh air, outdoor sports galore...goregeous.

Best of luck in your new job.
I don't know anything about the gun laws in NY MichaelD. I don't hunt or shoot recreationally, but I don't oppose anyone else who does. Venison is delicious! But my wife's family are all hunters, so they must be allowed to own guns of the sporting kind at the very least.

Welcome to our state! The Geneva area is quite beautiful. My wife and I have been considering taking the boat up to Keuka lake this weekend & stop by a few wineries. Idea: ATOT meet to go on a tour of wineries sometime in October in the fingerlakes region?

Gun laws? Shouldn't be an issue like it is in NYC. Obviously, if you live in any city, you can't just go out into your backyard and start shooting a 12 gauge. You need a permit for handguns (of course), but rifles/shotguns can be very easily purchased. Otherwise, if you're in the country, it sort of boils down to your neighbors. I think the rule is 500 feet from someone else's house; that doesn't seem to be followed in my community & no one complains. My neighbor has shot his shotgun in his back yard and out his front door. I was grateful for the fox he killed that had gotten one of our rabbits. Yesterday, my son sat out on our patio, making sure my .22 was sighted in for squirrel season. He must have gone through 150 to 200 shots.

Huge range in prices for real estate in that area. It looks like lots inside the city are tiny. Houses are decent sized though & quite affordable. Land is a little pricey in the area, but here's a nice fixer-upper farmhouse, 2458 sq feet & 100 acres for $250k:
here
You could get a farm and give your kids a hobby - raising fainting goats :p
When you're looking for a house, keep in mind that NY taxes are high; that's why property prices seem low.
