Say you are a security guard... would you die for your job?

I just watched the lobby scene of the Matrix tonight and it got me thinking about something. In movies, the security guards always seem to have a need to die to protect their employers crap. I'd guess they are there for body count reason in most movies, but to be honest I don't know if it translates over to real life.

I'm not a naturally violent person, so I would never get a job as a security guard in the first place. I doubt I would put my life on the line (IE: get into a shootout with someone trying to break into a building.) unless of course, myself or someone else is in direct danger. That is where I draw my line and I react.

You might call me a wuss, but money and possessions can be replaced, humans can't be magically brought back to life in most cases after a gunshot wound, etc.

Am I the only one who wouldn't die over some money/jewels/etc. of a large corporation?

depends on what I'm protecting and for whom.

I might put my life on the line if I was protecting government secrets or weapons, but not for art or gold.
 
Depends on how much I'm getting paid, how much I like the organization I'm working for, and how good my health insurance is. Also, how close the nearest hospital is. If all of those things come together, sure. If just one thing doesn't, then there's no way I'd die for my job.
 
I guess I would if it's in my contract. Of course, I wouldn't sign a contract to do that. If I was going to die *for* something, it would be for the good of the public (ie as a police officer, member of the military, or firefighter).

Agreed. Also, what are my odds? If I have full Kevlar with a automatic weapon and am trying to stop 2 dudes off the street wearin jeans n shirts and packin pistols.....Hell yeah, bring it.
Also, do I get a bonus? Like, if I get a bonus for stopping a breakin or something? Gettin paid to kill someone, how cool would that be.

If there was a job out there that paid WELL to kill people....Oh my God sign me up!
 
If I was a Secret Service agent or a solider guarding something important (nuclear weapons, etc.), then I wouldn't hesitate to die for my job. On the other hand, if I'm a rent-a-cop patrolling a supermarket parking lot for minimum wage and carrying nothing more than a can of pepper spray, I'm not about to take a bullet just to stop a shoplifter.
 
I had a part time security job about 2 years ago - it was for a small company... We carried guns, wore vests, had handcuffs, batons, pepper spray, the whole nine yards... The company worked for the city and we were very close with the police.

During firearms training it was reiterated that the use of deadly force was only warranted if and only if the life of yourself or another person were in danger of an imminent threat of deadly force against oneself. Deadly force is NEVER warranted against trespass of property or valuables.

That said, I never had any exciting gun encounters other than the occasional building clearing with the police with guns drawn. My current job with puters is nowhere near as exciting (every day was different) but I get paid a lot better and don't have to worry about getting my ass shot off.
 
If I had a job that required me to carry a gun, then yes, whatever I'm protecting is probably valuable enough that I would try to do my job of protecting it (unless it's clearcut that it's a losing battle). If I don't carry a gun, then hellz no.
 
This Got me thinking....

Say your Secret Service Agent and you see someone is about to shoot the president but you neglect to put your self in the line of fire.

What will happen to that agent ? Do they get jailed or just fired or what?

Good question. I'd imagine they probably have some sort of review committee (a la the Warren Commission) to decide whether you were derelict in your duty and what to do about it?

Those kink of people are rambo on crack, therefore they wouldn't hesitate to throw themself in the line of fire. The intelligent ones (they call coward) never ever become spook, because they rather work as paper pusher.

Hmm, maybe if it was a big company w/ a huge life insurance policy and I was already terminal or something. Otherwise, probably not.

 
I'd never take a job where I was expected to put my ass on the line to protect other peoples "stuff".

I've never really understood that ... I watched them refill an ATM once in L.A. ... three guys come up in a armored truck, two guys gets out with guns drawn, third guy gets out and opens the back to get the cash, one guy follows him in watching for bad guys, other guy waits at the truck, guns drawn the whole time. And this was in a "good" part of town. Wonder how thay handle it in the bad parts? I guess somebody has to do it, but I'll be damned if I'll sign up for that kind of risk for somebody else's cash.
