What will we call a recording artist's CD of songs? An album? A collection of songs? A 'download'?

(Or do you still call it a record like the old days?)

Do people talk about albums these days, tho? I keep hearing people talking about singer X's (or band X's) CD.

Id love to see individual releases rather than albums, then artists can release music as its written. This would also strengthen the case against bands that cram 14 bad songs as filler on a 17 song cd.

But the media independent term is album. When you download an artists full set of songs, you say you downloaded the whole album.

But the record company knows they can get $16 for the whole cd when there's only 2 good songs. Why make only $2 for 2 songs when you can make $16 for 2 songs?

Personally I see the albums I buy as the whole artwork, with different nuances in each song. And I'm not going to buy all my music on the net as I prefer CD quality, or even better in the fututre.

I guess so. What will a discography be called, when we don't use discs?

Because it costs more to cram those bad songs on a cd, and 2 good songs on Itunes costs you nothing and rakes in cash.

Look at it this way, if something like ituns or napster became the only way to get music, and you had low quality 30 second samples like itunes has now. Why release those horrible songs? All it does is cost them money to record their pre-written trash and toss it on shelves, when they can rake in from the few hits and make good money.

The term record will always be used simply because the sound is RECORDed in the studio.

Make a RECORD of this post.

Collective works? Discography was always a lame term IMO anyways :p

It doesn't cost any more to put 20 songs onto a cd as it does to put 1 on. So you're saying all the songs available via itunes are good songs and were known to be good songs before they were produced? All the songs on itunes still had to be recorded/produced/mastered before they made it to itunes. Can you predict a hit song written down on paper before it's been released? Besides, pressing cds isn't real expensive. They're still going to make a batch of songs hoping for a few hits, so they're going to continue to release them all at the same time and milk that for as long as possible.

Ahh so time in a recording studio and time with professional mixers and producers is free nowadays, thats pretty cool cuz i was thinking of cutting an album of myself singing sesame street songs to sell on ebay.

Seriously though, there are a LOT of songs on CDs that are obviously filler music, and are never intended to be hits, or even have a point.

Depends very much on the artist.

I mostly use the term album. Hopefully (but not too likely) they'll start making lossless downloads available--of course they'll have to get their PITA DRM poop on them first.
