Say I had about $15,000 and needed a car. (Updated for the "Garage" crowd.)

What would you suggest?

Update: As someone pointed out, I am not a "car" person. This will be the first car that I truly buy on my own. Like I said, I have about $15000 I can drop (I was saving to buy a motorcycle and a new tv but my car issues killed that). I'm currently in my rotations for Med school and have another year of that before I start residency. Don't really want car payments when I get my school loan money in one lump sum (pretty much what I'd be using to pay for it).
I am currently (this hour anyway) leaning towards certified preowned or something of the sort. I am weary of preowned in general and hoped to avoid used car salesmen completely. So the cert preowned seems like a good option. With Pres Day coming up, I was hoping to spend some time researching and then take advantage of whatever is being thrown at me then. I am overall hoping for something with Decent Gas Mileage and Not a ton of headaches with enough room for like 4 people. I keep hearing suggestions from Friends/Family to look into small SUV's like the Honda CRV, but to be honest, I don't know how much their opinion is really worth.

Pretty much any help/suggestion is appreciated.

OP:
I am going to look at some Honda's, Subaru's (what I was driving), and maybe Toyota. I am also not completely opposed to going for a Certified Pre-Owned rather than new.

I am really on the research stage so any suggestions would be completely appreciated.

I really don't have any strong opinions yet other than my 1996 Subaru ran like a champ until I took it to be inspected and realized that the estimate to get it up and in great shape is almost the KBB for the car.

With Pres day incoming I want to go look at some cars before hand and be able to go in know exactly what I want.

Thanks everyone ahead of time. Even the Trolls; you guys are never appreciated for your bumps.

Would have thought The Garage was more for Auto repair/Maintenance/Bragging.

If I was wrong than Mod's please move. Those guys would be more knowledgeable than the general OT crowd anyway.

The garage is the correct place and honestly unless you post what you want in a car we can't really help you. For $15k though the only thing new that you'd really be considering is the smaller economy cars, and probably one without many bells and whistles. If you want anything larger, more capable (like with AWD like your subaru) or with more options you'll be better off looking at used vehicles.

You could get a used Honda Civic and have no car payment. They're not the coolest car or the most comfortable car by any means, but the thing will run as long as the body holds up.

15 k for a car is a good price to be spending, there are a lot of good used cars for that price, you just have to look. New cars are a racket, you pay the dealer for the privilege of depreciation.

For 15 K I'd look for 3-5 year old cars with good factory options. You could get a used Subaru, with all the options for that price. Or used cars that aren't in vogue with all dealer options for that price. Car shopping is tough, if you want an "awesome new car" you have to pay for it. If you want an awesome used car, you have to look for it. Both are damn nice, and the only real difference is that you'll get a lot more out of a used car than a new one.

Would never pay cash for that much car when interest rates are so low right now....you can get free/almost free money even with an average credit score.

$15k is way too much to spend on a car unless it is disposable income or you are a car aficionado. Spend $4k on the best Honda Civic you can get and call it a day.
