Saw the most talented driver on the PA turnpike today

I was driving back to Michigan from visiting family in Philadelphia over the weekend. There was a small construction zone (maybe 2 miles long) on I-80 where the right lane on a 3-lane stretch of road was blocked off. No big deal, traffic was light... passed a couple big trucks that were in the middle lane and saw a PT Cruiser up ahead in the right lane on the other side of the orange construction barrels.

No work was being done due to the holiday weekend, so it was just an empty lane over there. The PT Cruiser started moving as I approached and I wondered how he was going to manage to merge into traffic with the barrels spaced only a few car lengths apart... then I got my answer. He was going to merge at 15 mph... in front of the string of trucks I had just passed. I learned this when I looked in my mirror and saw the PT Cruiser in front of clouds of white smoke coming from the lead truck's tires as orange construction barrels flew off the shoulder into the grass and the two trucks following emerged through the clouds of smoke swerving wildly, one with its trailer fishtailing behind it and almost hitting the cement barrier on the left.

I have to say, this was the most amazing thing I've seen on the road as I've never been witness to any severe accidents. Impressive driving by the truckers - didn't look to have even tapped the PT Cruiser.

Truckers are under-respected as good drivers. Think of the hundreds of millions of miles they run yearly as a whole, with relatively few accidents to speak of compared to average drivers per mile. All the while driving giant bastards and paying through the nose for diesel.

Yeah, they are scary-big but I've normally had the impression that they are good drivers. I imagine the bad ones aren't driving for long, and the remainder realize how dangerous they can be. Generally they don't act like buffoons and make good use of their lights to blink that it's ok to merge in front, etc.

Anyway, there's something inherently wrong with owners of PT Cruisers to begin with.

I have seen scenes like that far too often, which shows how idiotic people can be. My own example of something I witnessed about a year ago: there is a local highway, only 2 lanes (3 lanes become 2). People like to get into the on-ramp lane and speed ahead of people already in traffic; well one guy tries to do this to get in front of a huge 18 wheeler and realizes at the last moment that he won't make it, so instead ends up driving up on the curve into the grass and slamming on his breaks, creating a big cloud of dust and then jumping off the curb into the traffic lane behind the truck. From jumping the curb I could see that it must have scraped the bottom of his front bumper really badly and he probably messed up his wheel as well. The whole thing would have been avoided if the guy just had enough patience to let the truck go first and get behind him, which would have meant waiting literally about 1.5 seconds for the truck.

Yup, take them all off of the roads please.

Too bad. They could have saves us all some future headaches.

thats a shame......we would have been better off had the driver been killed....
He probably cost those truckers a few thousand bucks in ruined tires....and he also probably has no idea .

**** You.

<- Owner of a PT Cruiser.

See, that's what we're talking about 🙂

But yeah, truckers are generally awesome drivers. The bad ones weed themselves out quickly because they end up being expensive for their employers.

They're getting the last laugh, as diesel is cheaper than regualr unleaded now.

They really need to fix the whole trailer fishtailing BS when trucks slam on there brakes.

Maybe they could call up Nissan and ask for some tips on bending the laws of physics. 🙂

Does your purse match your Cruiser? 😉

Why no, my cruiser is silver and my purse is re......wait a second, I see what you are trying to say!

I-80 or the PA Turnpike, thats not the same road, Turnpike runs in southern part of the state except for the NE extenson

I always see people trucks and buses getting cut off. Apparently, everybody thinks they all brake and slow down just like cars.

You're forgiven. None if it is good, so I can see why you were confused.
