If Gandalf could summon birds to ride on, why didn't they just ride the birds the whole way and skip the orcs and goblins.

its quite possible it's one of those things you can only request if you are in serious shit. at least that was our assumption. Everyone thought this too lol

keep in mind the birds dropped them off in a pretty shitty spot

Gandalf doesn't really "summon" the birds. He asks them for their help and if they feel like it, they do.

The birds do their own shit and hate helping out unless they think its special.

The eagles owed Gandalf a favor iirc. Also gandalf didn't turn the trolls to stone, the sun did. The sun doesn't turn orcs to stone.

The same reason James and Lily Potter couldn't just disapparate away from Voldemort.

Heh. I never thought of this one. That's a DAMN good question. In a magical universe where about any adult wizard can teleport, not near enough of them use it for a tactical combat advantage. The need to get combat lessons from Nightcrawler.

I always presumed it had something to do with being unable to safely "co-apparate" infants or Voldemort having such power that he could track them through it somehow. Or just a matter of humans doing stupid things in the heat of a moment.

I think it's just part of the whole 'suspension of disbelief' thing imo.

its kinda like you know you're going to die one day, so why not off yourself now. you don't because you want to enjoy the moments in between. so shut up and enjoy the movie.
