I had the great, good privilege of hearing Marine and courageous American patriot Dr. Daniel Ellsberg, looking and moving like a 50 year old at the age of 85, speak last night.

He was there, deep into it all, with a high (GS18) level access to all the classified info, in the 1960s as we expanded the war in 'Nam. I learned some stuff I didn't know.

Did you know that in addition to the Top Secret classification there is a "Top Secret Classified" for stuff which can be denied to others otherwise cleared, including the President, if so desired?

Bonus Round: Hey kidz, you can play along at home (or work!) Riddle me this. What was the very first democratically elected government covertly overthrown by the CIA after WWII? Participate and post your answers! It's fun!

Probably the US. If not that, probably Germany.

And yes, there's various methods of compartmentalization which are known and unknown within the intel field. Nobody needs to know everything, or the methods of protecting everything.

I'd imagine that fits the description of the modern SAP classification.
Or maybe I'm thinking of something even more closely guarded.
Public learned a few things when those document types got passed around on unsecured email.

Unfortunately, this is one of those circumstances of nobody but the CIA knowing if the CIA has done good.

Which should be a grave concern for any American, not only for our democracy's sake but for the security of this nation and the world.

I'm really getting uncomfortable with this seemingly new meme. The CIA does nothing like over throwing another sovereign country without the explicit approval and direction from the POTUS. They are not autonomous.

I would like to think so but where is the oversight? If another country did that to us would we not consider it an act of war? If a president authorized such a scheme to overthrow a leader, would that not be considered an act of war? Shouldn't congress be required to approve that?

Whether it's the CIA's own doing or its done at the president's request, it's an abuse and an overreach of power that should be reigned in.

Oh, I agree with you that this direct presidential power to essentially bypass Congress is the crux of the problem. Once again, congress needs to do it's job and legislate. Then the powers that be wouldn't constantly try to bypass them.

Bear in mind who gave up the power. Far too often people wish to offload their responsibility so they aren't on the hook for when the reaper comes knocking.

Exactly, not wanting to have anything on record, seems to be the major strategy in getting re-elected.
