The Aztek is undergoing a drastic redesign for its second year of production (this is monstrously expensive for GM and almost without precedent).

Apparently GM's sales goal for the first year of production was 70,000 units, and to date there are about 7,300 on the open road. This would be bad enough, but consider that roughly 2,500 of these are being driven by GM executives who are forced to drive them to generate public interest in the car! Essentially GM has sold roughly 7% of their annual targeted sales for the vehicle to date!

The Aztek is, to me, not that much less appealing than any other Pontiac (I know some people like raw performance wrapped in weird ribbed cladding with a rattly, plasticky interior full of light-grey knobs and switches, but not me), but it is really sad to see GM losing its shirt on this monstrosity. I imagine, on the bright side, it is basically mechanically sound, and one could probably pick one up for a song. The black ones actually do not look as horrid as the rest of the colors, because the cladding does not contrast as much.

I drive by a Pontiac dealer on my way to work every day. These things are just piling up on the lot. I would be surprised if they've sold one.

:D

I've seen a few without D plates now. One had a fittingly evil license plate:

DDT 666

The Isuzu Vehicross's styling, while odd, is a lot more successful, IMO, and it has 240 HP and can go off road if you want to. It's not just a funny mini-van.

First one I ever saw it was parked in front of a Pontiac dealership. Actually pulled a u-turn and went back and parked to get a closer look.

WTF were they thinking when this was designed? How did it get through GM's committees before authorizing spending millions of dollars on it. Granted, I'm a die-hard SUV hater, but I don't think I've ever found one person who didn't think this model is absolutely hideous.

If I got one, forget the black color-I want puck green with a yellow interior. Now that would be a classic.

i'd buy one if they where ridiculously discounted. I mean like $10K brand new.

i'd prolly have to rip some of the fugli off it too.

I think the people you saw driving one, must have been on survivor or something.

I heard it costs like $2000 to get the back window replace on one of those. Makes sense, because the entire back end of that thing is the window...

Azteks are ugly, true.

Perhaps the decision makers at GM are all refugees from AMC - ever seen an AMC Gremlin? That's ugly!
