I was taking care of a patient today who has Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer spread throughout his body. He is DNR/DNI which means that if he dies he dies, they will not intervene. The only medicine they have him on is morphine for end of life pain control.

Anyways so im watching his telemetry (i.e EKG) and he starts to show waveforms that scream heart attack/ myocardial infarction). His pulse goes from 110 to 48 in about a 3-5min period and his heart rhythm is showing increased signs of ischemia.

So 2 of my colleagues come in (females) and they hold both of his hands. About 3min after they start holding his hands, his heart rate goes back up to around 110 (which is normal for him) and his heart rhythm showed no signs of a previous heart attack!

Poor guy just wont let go :(

If he didnt die by now maybe he will make it towards the morning. He also has multi-system organ failure so its for the better.

Its just amazing what human touch can do. BTW he is pretty much out of it, he doesnt talk, blink or anything. If you shake him gently he will groan, but thats about it. So his body must have just felt the human touch and decided to keep fighting.

What field are you in?
I'm an EMT and I hate getting patients with a DNR. It makes me feel useless, mostly because there isn't much I can do to ease their pain. I can't give any drugs or anything like that. All I can do is transport.

Seeing something like that must be hard.

Well, of course that's the explanation.

I'll second that.

It's amazing what the human will can overcome. Without getting into all the gory details, I saw it up close and personal earlier this year. Sometimes, you have to see it to believe it.

He was coming back for the possibility of a 3-some with nurses. Thanks for dissapointing him. :|

Seriously, human touch is very important. I saw a study a long time ago about how touch can change the ora your body gives off (like IR, EM, heat, etc.) So when a mean nasty person touches you, your ora is impacted negatively, etc.

I was really awed by that story. Feeling so bad for the poor patient. I guess we all like to hang on to life as long as we can. I was in hospital two years ago, felt like I was ready to die, but when my fiancee (now wife) came into the room and held me by the hand I felt strength to fight the illness. I am now fully recovered. :)

Are you enjoying it? I have put alot of thought of getting my nursing degree. I am just not sure I can leave the field yet. I really enjoy the fast paced workstyle that this position gives me.

If you dont think reversing from a lethal dysrythmmia without any medical intervention except for human touch a miracle, then you are a fool at best ;)

Are EMT's allowed to give medications? When I was one we wern't allowed to give anything other than an epi-pen if a patient already had one.

Now I'm an Anesthesiologist and can give anything I want :)

Saw a miracle today.

Based on the description, I'd have to say that clearly, Divine intervention was witnessed here. It was God's will that this poor guy with cancer and multiple organ failure not have a heart attack tonight. There can be no other possible explanation!
