Savings photos after reformat. If I don't get them back... I'm dead

So... I figured I'd do my parents a favour and reformat their laggy 2yr old Dell.

I took hours backing up their files, and little did I know...

My mother had 3 years' worth of digital photos stored under "Shared Pictures".

I thought they were all in her My Pictures folder.

She just found out, and... she is not happy.

I would be reallllly pleased if anyone could help me out.

When I formatted the drive to install XP, I chose the "quick" format, so I'm guessing that will make it easier.

Please post if you know anything about this.

Don't do anything on the HD. Nothing. The more you use the HD the more old files you'll destroy, remove it and use an enclosure or use a bootable disc to try and run a recovery wizard. Someone will know the name of a good one but it won't be me.

RUT ROH!

Do not install any new stuff on the drive or anything because you will write over the old data.

You need to try some kind of data recovery program. Google it, im sure there are some freeware programs that could work.

Crap, well I already installed some stuff on it, and am currently installing recovery software. Trying everything until I find a solution.

To put it mildly, you're fvcking it up even more. Quit working on that hard drive unless you want to erase all hope of retrieving your data.

Don't even turn that computer on again. Period. I mean it.

What you want to do is download some recovery software onto your computer, slave that hard drive to your machine, and pull off every last byte of old data that you can. And for future reference, before you decide to sweep in and save the day, you might want to make sure and not knee yourself in the crotch.

Just an FYI for future reference.

That's real close to the truth. Slave the drive to another computer to work on. Here's a link to birdpups' data recovery info. Some is even free. http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=32&threadid=1687590&enterthread=y

Seriously, good luck. I have 5+GB of family photo's in my computer, and half is from our vacation accross seas. My parents would KILL me if i lost those pics.

Slave it, run GetBackData[NTFS/FAT/whatever you need], stop working on other people's computers 😛 GetBackData is awesome, I've used it successfully on malfunctioning, erased, formatted, etc. drives.

Let that be a lesson to your parents. Always back up your data.

Right. Those photos should have been burned to CDs. In the meantime - prepare to be disinherited. 🙂
