Save Betamax

The EFF and Save Betamax are contacting Congress today to protest the INDUCE Act, which would overthrow the Betamax decision.

Why is Betamax important? That's the court case that ruled that VCRs were legal even though some people to used them to copy movies. The Betamax ruling is the only thing that protects your ability to own a VCR, CD-burner, DVD-burner, TiVo, or P2P networking software.

The INDUCE Act would effectively give current major copyright owners veto power over any new technology that might impact their work. It would destroy the future of innovation in the US.

If you want to read more about INDUCE before making a decision, you can check out Ernie Miller's Guide to the INDUCE Act, which analyzes the Act in detail and gives links to most other major references to it on the web.

Please write/fax your representative (click on the EFF link above for a handy form) or call them (click on the Save Betamax link above.)

Yeah, they're a bit schizoid.

However, it's worth pointing out that the music and movie industries are dwarfed by the computer industry. Just Microsoft and Intel together are larger than the entire music and movie industry, and there are plenty of other big computer companies like Cisco, HP, and IBM.

We can't let music and movies hold our entire economy hostage because they don't want to adjust their business models. Besides, they have a poor track record with technology. They tried to stop the VCR in the 1980s, but today they make most of their money from videotapes and DVDs..

Oh the irony!!

It's interesting to see how well the music/movie industries have funded the proponents of this bill:

Senators Hatch [R-UT $168,860], Leahy [D-VT $220,450], Boxer [D-CA $517,660], L. Graham [R-SC $72,273,]
Majority Leader Frist [R-TN $58,550]
Democratic Leader Daschle [D-SD $382,760]

Why is it that if you accepted that kind of money as a corporate officer and did something contrary to your company's interests, you could be sued and possibly imprisoned, but if you accept money like that as a member of Congress, it's just business as usual?

Can you give me the link to the info about the money the Senators got. Leahy is up for election in VT and this would nice to "leak" to the local news how he is supporting Vermonters.

Special intrest money at work again. We need to quit talking about being a free country and start demanding that we be a free country.

We are trying to put together some info on the money Leahy got and what excatally will happen if this goes into place. He has lots of support from the liberal college students, but with him up for election again they would change their tune if Ipods, PVR, CDR, DVDR, and VCR's became illegal in a sense. So any help would be great if you can give me some real good links and such. I have pulled some but am looking for the watered down version too for the students.

most corporations have a money schedule. that is, they give a certain amount based on where you are from, if you're an incumbent, what positions of power you hold in congress, etc. there really isn't a bias toward one party or another, though it may appear that way at times. (of course the republicans are going to get more money when they control congress, they have more incumbents and more positions of power, etc)
