ok price. but seller "IBM" on ebay sells the MUCH BETTER X and T series for reasonable prices, and it's brand new item directly from IBM with 3-year warranty. A and R are low end thinkpads.

A isn't their low end. A is their desktop replacement series, ala Dell's 8200 series.

A = desktop replacement 15"+ screens
T = lightweight 14.1" screens
X = subnotebooks 12.1" screens
R = budget....not sure about screen sizes

Wrongoooooo

A series is the highest end laptop IBM makes, and the A p series is top of the top, only draw back is it's aheavy mother(7 LBS)

Cheapest on ebay stores is around 1699 and that's an auction
This is 1367(maybe less if Charles is in angood mood)no real haggling and it's brand new also 3yr IBM Warranty

You'll be hard pressed to find a laptop of this quaility and with this feature set(wireless, cdrw\dvd,UXGA, IE1394, etc.) for less

Great deal WindWalker... if I were in the market for a laptop I'd be all over this.

Well, laugh is sort of right, since IBM's ebay storefront sells X, T, R, and also A series lappies. A similarly configured A30p goes for around $1000-$1600 on the storefront, I believe, depending on availability. Also, the T series is IBM's flagship series, with the A being second, X being third, and R being the last. Nonetheless, the A30p is one nice machine. :)

Just checked...IBM's storefront has A30's with 1ghz chips for $1000, and A30's with 1.13Ghz chips for $1100...slightly slower than the aforementioned A30p, but I guess this provides different price points for different buyers here...

killer.... yeah. that's for sure... on your BACK... 7.5 lb... sheeet...and I thought 5.5 was getting on the heavy side.... I picked up an X series from ibm's ebay store for $1100 (X22... they had the X23's a few days ago).. sure the specs aren't as full fledged, but it's only 3.6 pounds and a 4.5 hour battery instead of 2.5. For hauling around between classes (and using wireless net), this one's perfect for me. But different stuff for different folk I guess.

I don't think these are very hot deals considering that these are some big, slow MOFO's
Look for the sotec deal on this forum THAT is a hot deal for a laptop!

Yeah, but then you have to use one of those piece of crap glidepads instead of the infinitely superior trackpoint that comes with IBM laptops

Trackpoint? Superior? HAHA!

That can only come from someone who never uses laptops.
Makes sense that most companies ditched it because it's superior.

And i would even take a bulky dell/toshiba/compaq/hp laptop over that one ... cause they can be had cheaper!

I totally agree with iamme.

The i series (manufactured by Acer for IBM I believe) is actually IBM ThinkPad's LOWEST model.

A series is merely a desktop replacement, AKA big, heavy, fat, heavy, big, fat, get it?

The T or R series is the best combination of portability, weight, power and build design.

Anyone know if any Thinkpads come with 32mb video cards? I know that the very high end A series has a 32mb Radeon 7500 card in it, but what about these?

You get what you pay for, IBM makes the best laptops hands down, their customer service is superb also. go get urself a hp/compaq and see how long it last you, toshibas are nice, haven't used one tho so i can't comment, and as for dell, well its a dell =D, but on a more serious note, we use dell laptops at work and we have a lot of problems with them. go ibm and you won't be dissapointed.

Notice how newer Dell's have re-introduced Trackpoint's onto their laptops?

Someone who'll take a Dell/Toshiba/Compaq/HP over an IBM obviously hasn't owned one ;)

Someone how recommends trackpoints obviously knows jacksh!t about laptops! :D

Oh, and I only work with two people who would kill people at IBM because of their crappy laptops.
And as soon as you are out of your warranty you pay double. :D
I rather save money now and get a new laptop every two/three years (which you will have to do anyhow if you need to stay on top of things) than buy an super expensive laptop (with things/services that I don't need or that are overcharged) which I will ditch after two years too. :D
But go ahead Mr.Knowitalllaptop

And: $3300 ... yeah, right!

Just placing my preference:

I would prefer a trackpoint anyday mainly because of the immense time I spend travelling. I find when you're on a 10hr flight, it's too much movement to consitantly use your thumb to move the cursor when the trackpoint is very ergonomical. Also, it doesn't interfere with typing as the glide does (when there's no room to plug a USB mouse).

I simply feel it takes too much effort to use the glide, as you have to keep taking your hand off the keyboard to highlight multiple pages, etc...

Not saying the Glide doesn't have it's plusses, just not for me....I'd like to hear the points for the GlidePad though...

ummm... no

i use the trackpoint about 10X more often than the touch pad on my lappy. traackpoint allows you to keep both your hands on the keyboard.

and speaking as a person whose had a lappy from almost every company... IBM is by far the most durable. I cant remember how many times i bumped and bruised my T21 and it didn't skip a beat.

I don't think I will ever get a touchpad on a laptop again. They are really annoying. But that is just my opinion.

lol, I don't claim to be a "laptop" expert.

I have, however, owned 8 laptops in the past 3 years:

Thinkpad 600E (for sale, check my sig)
Gateway Solo 3350
Gateway Solo 1450
Compaq Evo N160C
Thinkpad A30p
Thinkpad T20
Compaq N400C
Dell Inspiron 4150 (for sale, check my sig)

The Thinkpads were always my favorites.

Oh and I know a few people who love Thinkpads, who are laptops experts: CNet, ZDNet, PC Magazine, etc ;)

Well then by all means get ripped off by IBM!
I was only trying to help you.
You're fueling the economy by doing that which in turn helps my stocks, so go ahead!
IDI0T

And no: a touchpad is preferred by everybody I know that works with laptops.
(Oh, and I mean WORK like in USE A LOT, kid!)

In my eyes THESE are better deals:

Compaq 906US Notebook
with 14.1" TFT display. AMD Athlon 4 1500+ 1.33 GHz processor, 256MB DDR SDRAM memory, 20GB hard disk, DVD-ROM & CD-RW Combo Drive, 56K Modem, 10/100 Ethernet, 6.5 lbs. Lithium Ion battery $749.99

Hewlett Packard XT155 Notebook
with 14.1" TFT Display. Intel Celeron 1.8 GHz CPU, 512 MB DDR DRAM, 30 GB hard disk, DVD-ROM & CD-RW Combo drive, 10/100 network card $999.99

You're very obviously the person who thinks, "if I don't like it, it must suck", so it's pointless to have a conversation with you.

Here's my final comment to ya. Like I said before, you have to own a Thinkpad to appreciate it. There is a reason why they always get rave reviews from people who review laptops for a living. I admit those deals you posted are great values. Go into those threads and talk about how much you love them. Quit posting your anti-IBM drivel and offer a valid opinion for potential laptop buyers to benefit from. In other words, quit thread crapping.

I'm done with you now, kid.

Why do you have such a hard on for touch pads? It's a personal preference and some people prefer the little nipple thing.
I have a t21 i purchased from their ebay store and I've had some problems with it but their service and support is excellent. If i need to send it in I have it back two days after I send it. I personally hate touchpads (one of the factors in deciding on a thinkpad for me) but the downside to trackpoints is that if you arent careful and rest something on top of your laptop with the screen closed it can crack your lcd. I have a 3 year warranty that covers me for mail in or carry in service so I don't know what your gripe is about the warranty period when you say you'd switch every 2 years anyway.
