mile high tower

Personally I think it'll never finish and/or it will (or there will) be a disaster.

WTF, you messing with us? Fix your link maybe? Ban?

Hehe, good thing he was just surfing for Pron!

wwwdotiFAILdotcom

result of searching for repost. would have been hilarity if i linked to pr0n.

When should we expect a plane through it ?

I'm betting that both the Dubai tower and this mile high crap is coming down by terrorists.

With the right amount of money and resources you can do almost anything with engineering these days.

That thing is going to have such a looooooong natural vibration period 😀

Who else is expecting something to happen to the Dubai Tower once it's complete and the UAE continues relations with 'the evil West'?
Same thing with Saudi Arabia and the US having a military presence on that land. That's one of the things Osama bin Laden preached about throughout his rise in relevance throughout the late 80s and 90s.

its not exactly a mile by international standards. its short 30 feet.

the article says " 5,250 feet."

the international mile of 5,280 feet, 1,760 yards, or exactly 1,609.344 meters.

so he just self'd

I read about this this morning. (hm..I always hate when I have to type the same word twice in a row...) Anyway, I can't decide if it's really cool, or really worrisome and bound to end in disaster. Perhaps both. I read that it's so tall that construction workers and materials will have to be carried by helicopter for most of its construction. Link.

How the hell would I know, I'm not a structural engineer. I'm all for oil princes wasting their money though. When the black gold runs out they'll have nothing to show for it.

Since when is investing in real estate 'wasting money'?

People are building skyscrapers on all corners of the Earth. They just build them a little bigger in the Middle East.

Plans have changed several times to make it higher, but the final version is expected to be 2,300ft with 160 storeys.

From the last line in the article.

edit:

Wow, what TERRIBLE writing.

I can only guess that line is referring to

Until recently, the still-under-construction Dubai Tower was expected to be the world's tallest building.

In the previous paragraph.

How will terrorists hit it? They're both in Muslim countries, and at the risk of sounding un-PC (I don't care), Muslims pretty much have a monopoly on plane hijackings.

That's because they don't have to worry about their own people taking down their towers. Without Muslim extremists, the history book of plane hijackings is full of empty pages.

$5bn on a mile high tower is wasting money. $500 million on a 787 dreamliner is wasting money. You are daft if you think that they dont waste money constantly.

Actually Cubans practically invented hijacking.

I hope it fails, comes crashing down and wipes out 90% of their population.
Then mabey we can move in and get some oil!

They may have been the first, but read up on the history of airline hijackings and you'll find an underlying theme.

*YAWN* You guys are such a bore.

Plane hijackings are way out of style. It's no fun now that cockpit doors are reinforced and pilots are carrying guns.

Besides, how many planes have al-Qaeda flown into skyscrapers in Muslim countries? 0? I would think any large skyscraper in the US (current or future) would be at a higher risk of attack than a skyscraper in any other country in the world.
