my dads 56 and a budding cyclist.... seeing as he has the money he's got himself a good road bike, and some top equipment (clips, LED lamps, slick eye wear and helmets)

he's like the guy who has everything and being of an engineering disposition he's pretty much obsessed with numbers, stats, specs lol... he loves to know how fast he's been, how fast time wise he cycled his course etc

so i was thinking, just as an initial xmas present idea...... a satnav system to go on his bike. i think he'd like that very much

i've looked at tomtom rider, but seems to be more motorcycle orientated...can it be fitted to a pedal bike?

that's a good choice, i researched it a while ago. also replaces the tahometer that many riders have because of increased accuracy and easy of config.

I have a Garmin Vista Cx for mountain biking in Alaska. What's nice about it is I can upload maps into it, save my tracks, and download or upload to and from my computer for review. There are many accessories to mount it onto a bicycle set it up in your car, and it has expandable memory cards.

Been tossing around the idea of publishing them online somehow so others could find it useful.

You can send tracks to Motion Based (motionbased.com IIRC) and let other people see your rides and download the tracks. It's free to store ten tracks at once online.

I've found it fairly helpful. I download the track for a ride in an area I've never been so that I don't get lost. Less than a week ago I was riding along, realized I wasn't on any trail at all, and used the GPS to find my way back. I could do the same thing with a map (and I still bring map+compass in case the GPS stops working), but it would take longer.

Main reason why i bought it. It's amazing how I can ride 5 minutes into the wilderness here on the outskirts of Anchorage, and already end up getting lost or turned around or whatever. I also carry a can of Bear Spray for the inevitable run-in with a brown or black bear... which I already had with a brown and black bear with a trip on the Russian River Trail ...good thing i was in a group of people....simply amazing stuff....

That's awesome that you've got wilderness so close. I'm jealous. It takes me quite a while to drive to areas like that (live in Oakland, CA). And yup, that's why I got one too. But I've actually got more use out of the car nav features of the 60csx. It's already reaching "how did I live without it?" status.
