Esh - must be hard to navigate through. On the plus side I think our planet looks nicer with a ring

In the near future we are going to need to start cleaning up low earth orbit. There are many dead satellites and space debris from previous missions that running into them will become a real problem.

Sadly, it will be a low-paying and thankless job, at least according to Planetes.

They need to have it enter into the earth's atmosphere so that it disintegrates into dust, much like how the mir was disposed.

Those are just the satellites, not including any junk. I doubt cleaning it up would happen anytime in the foreseeable future - it's EXTREMELY expensive.

I watched a show before, in which it argues with all the debris we are leaving in orbit, we are actually building a cell and trapping ourselves on earth...

There will be so much debris and dead satellites flying around orbit, eventually anything that tries to leave earth will be hit...

I suppose the space shuttle would look kind of silly with a giant cow catcher on the front

That's what happens, over the years their orbits decay until they "hit" the atmosphere. Yeah there's a lot of junk up there, but it's not like the stuff we throw up stays there forever (just for decades ;))

That's really cool. You can click on each satelite and it will give you the name... then google it and find out what each satelite does.

On the Menu, click Satellite -->Select -->Choose the satellite you want to see and click satellite info... you will get the info in your browser (if you have pop-ups enabled)

Damn! those Sirius satellites are far off...

What are the chances of two satellites colliding? Would this be akin two to two people wandering around the earth and randomly bumping into each other

Well they've already got a map, and orbits don't change much (if at all) over the years, not to mention satellites don't have to orbit at the exact same distance from earth. I'd say the chances of a collision are terrible, barring some asteroid strike that sends one flying off course. All of these things are multi-million dollar investments, I'm sure they've done their homework.
