Satellite Radio

I don't know if any of you guys have been paying attention to what's going on in radio these days but there are two companies coming out with Satellite Radio for cars and home. The company I work for has been developing the system for one of the companies (Sirius). One of their test cars came down to VA today and we got a peek, WOW! I couldn't believe the quaility of the sound coming from that car. It was amazing. Funniest thing is, it was a factory system with the Satellite Radio package inside. Just so you know, Sirius is looking at a Feb 14 launch so check it out when it comes to your town. I really think it will change the way radio is done forever.

Yeah Sirius and XM are doing the same thing pretty much. Have you gotten a chance to hear the quaility of the satellite sound yet?

i dont believe paying for radio service is worth it, same goes for paying for a program guide for your tivo (thats what i think)

Cool idea and all, but I'll never pay for satellite radio. I don't care how good it is, radio is supposed to be local. It's already bad enough with conglomorations like Clear Channel exporting the same pre-recorded DJ tracks to multiple locales. There is no way for a national satellite radio broadcast to remain local. I'll stick with good ol' Frequency Modulation thanks. Besides, if I want high quality sound, I'll play a CD.

Re: Tivo. Best $9 a month you can spend.

So long as it plays nonstop music (minus name of artist and song) and plays the studio versions of the song (not the radio edits), and can do it fairly cheap, I'm game!

Got any more info? I doubt they'd offer my type of music though 🙁

Also, does long can the signal follow you? I'm not going to loose my reception as the satellite travels around the planet am I?

im pretty sure they either have geosynchronous satelites or multiple satelites covering all parts of the planet.

my pioneer is XM ready, but i'm not going to fork over $10 a month to use its service for the following reason:

before installing a cd player - 99% radio, 1% other (tape, MD/CD/Laptop thru car kit)

after getting a cd player AND a cd burner AND morpheus - 97% cd, 3% other (radio, MD, laptop)

i'd never pay for radio as i know it because i don't like the music on it. they play the same pop stuff over and over.... do you guys know if this satellite radio will be different? will they play bands like the ataris and bad religion? if they have a station dedicated to that type of music, i might pay 🙂 otherwise, as always, the radio sucks.

Satellite ready HU: $300
Reciever for HU: $300
antenna: $100

Add it up.. what do ya get... No thanks.

The one I'm working on will have 60 different channels of music and 40 of news/sports/broadway/finance/and more. No commercials. Music/news/sports/broadway and everything you can listen to for 24 hours a day. Also, the channels go all over the country. You won't loose the signal no matter where you go. I know they are working on a global deal but I don't think it will come out at the same time as the US release.

Sirius will have 60 different music stations and 40 different news/sports/broadway/and more channels. I'm sure you can find something you like😉

you know what might persuade me... if they had radio dramas like they did a long time ago. like those lone ranger things, or the shadow. those were cool!

I'll look around at work tomo for the flyer that just went around. It showed all of the contracts Sirius had signed with companies to air their type of entertainment. I'll see if I can find it and post it up if I can (and if it's public info😉).

Over and over and over and over....😉

Yeah, those 30 seconds to change a CD are a real pain. 😛 I think it's an interesting concept, don't get me wrong. I just do not think that it will be able to replace traditional radio, especially for local content. I listen to radio mainly for the local morning show in Toledo. I don't see that local programming being able to migrate to a national network. That, and the idea of paying for something that I can get for free. Part of a car trip to me is absorbing the local color via the radio.

From what I've read about it, this is the deal (you can probably find articles via a google search):
There are two satelites in geo-synchrones(sp?) orbit above the US. They transmit the signal down. Planet side, there are repeaters to boost the signal in areas where the satelite would have trouble reaching (say, a city with sky-scrapers).

So the signal will follow you and the reception will still be strong wherever you go. Well almost. One review (Washington Post) said that for 95% of the area they drove around in, they had perfect reception.

I like the idea of satelite radio. God knows local radio has gotten pretty horrible lately (Clear Channel crap). Just wish the upfront costs weren't so high. The monthly fee isn't that bad though.

The only radio worth lisrtening to is Pacifica Radio free Berkeley, Alternative Radio, National Public Radio, PBS, and the BBC.

If the farmers on their tractors start listening to those, there'll be a revolution in this country.

<< yes but would satellite radio work if your reciever is behind the satellite dish (in space) ?? >>

How could your reciever in your car be behind the satellite in space?

The one thing that I would like is ESPN regional radio. The worst thing is trying to find the football game while driving through a new town on the AM. Then once you find it, you get aweful noise in the background. I'm thinking of getting the XM setup if I can get a killer discount on the part at Best Buy.

i would nvr pay for satellite radio personally.

<< Re: Tivo. Best $9 a month you can spend. >>

no kidding. best is to get lifetime subscription. Tivo is so worth the money.
