I currently live in-town with my cable internet, but I'm moving to the boondocks where cable has not yet been invented. Does anyone knoe how much per month Satellite internet is? what kind of hardware I will need? or are there other internet services besides the dish.

PS. I am pretty sure that wireless is not giving out any more accounts to that area, so no joy with that :(

I have StarBand, your other choice is DirectWay or the ultimate vaporware, WildBlue in`05.

I'm paying $70/mo had a $400 equip/install fee back in 2000. No telling what the ratios are today.

Yes its expensive, but it works at mid-fast speeds. I live off the grid, so no alternative, not even dialup.

i used to have Direcway satellite thru AOL back when my block didnt have a cable line/dsl wasnt available. If its ur only option go for it, but its very frustrating at times especially if u play games online (which are basically impossible to play thru satellite because of ping times). I dont know if AOL offers satellite anymore but i paid about $150 up front for installation and about $50 a month.

I'd check with satellite providers. It's possible that with some systems would be priced similarily, but offer a decent TV package as well.

Keep in mind that Satelite Internet has good data throughput(damn proper term escapes me :| ), but poor Latency. So it's good for surfing or Downloading, but useless for any kind of Action(FPS, Racing, RTS) Gaming.

edit: spelling

What is your ping time to google?

And the price is not too bad. I have to pay $58/month for 3.0/256 cable.

Is satellite just basically all download and upload is done through dialup? I haven't been keeping up with satellite technologies. What kind of speeds does satellite get?

Ping times will probably be 800ms +. 22,000 miles is a long way to travel. ;)

Well, thats a major bummer. I would probably be using the internet mostly for Internet games. That really sucks. Thanks for your input, I will probably not be getting satellite now, and will try to find something else. :)

I set my dad up with DirecWAY and it is awefull. S L O W at the times you need it. If you have the technical ability check to see if ISDN is available. It is in my dad's area and is about the same price when you consider the dish cost.

You will not beable to play internet games on a satalite. It is faster to dial up with your 56K. Maybie dual bonded 56K would be a better option.
