My dad is looking at getting Satellite internet for his wife. She is currently located at a different job, in the middle of nowhere (closest phone is 6 miles, but they have power, and a radio phone right now). He wanted to ask me how he could get her setup with something broadbandish, so they could chat (preferrably using voice) over the net. What should I recommend to him? Last I checked, latency on satellites causes issues with applications like this, but I don't know if that is still the case. Please help!

thanks,
Rob

Latency is still the case. For IM/web surfing, etc, it works fine, but with voice, the latency is a bit bad. It would work, but you may not like it. Remember, with satellite, you are travelling many miles up, then back down -- you're bound to get quite a bit of latency when talking with satellites.

I think ( at least mine would, if I had it ) still uses the phone line for uploading your requests which are then sent via satillite. And if there is no phone then...

Well, that's pretty much what I figured. Phone isn't an option.

I doubt cell service works out there, but that might be a possibility.

They launched 2 systems that provide 2 way communication about 8 months ago, latency is a problem, but it'll work,
