In the hopes of avoiding Moderation, let's keep this generic, eh? No links, no how-to stories, etc.

I visited a guy I know who retired a few years ago, so I haven't seen him very often as of late. He was having some trouble with his computer, that wasn't the interesting part of the visit . . .

He had one of those little satellite dishes, and I asked as part of conversation, hey, how do you like that? What channels are you getting. Smugly he sez, "All of 'em."

He then goes to show me the card programmer he has hooked up to his computer, with which he reprograms his satellite card every month when the access provider changes their codes.

Stealing cable used to be a pretty big deal, but they had ways of telling who was drawing the signal. Short of having someone drive around and count satellite dishes, it doesn't seem like there's any way to catch guys like my friend (who is actually a pretty nice guy except for the stealing part ;)).

So I guess the question is, how widespread is this? I would like to think that most people are inherently honest (esp. my friend) but it doesn't seem to be working out that way . . .

The more militant part of me says that anything brroadcast through American airspace should be free, just ike public television, but then the more logical part says, "Yeah, but it cost a ton of money to put those satellites up there . . ."

So what are your thoughts on the subject?

I find a surprising number of people have stolen cable, but an even larger number know the expensive piece of hardware they need to do so and are always on the look out for it :)

They are NOT legal in Canada although very common. Signal theft is illegal everywhere. This idea goes back to the Big Dish era when American programmer were not allowed to sell programming in Canada so every big dish had a "cloned" decoder box to capture ALL US programming for free. This was never mandated but a few yrs back it was and opened up a whole new can of worms. Canadian with access to an american address, would sdubscribe to programming and pay for it but give their address as if they were residing in the US..this was known a "Grey Market"
This same situaion is being played out again with the small dishes. There are presently 2 companies offering programming and their decoding hasn't been compromised but the American offerings have.

Only experience I have with this is there was an IRC channel dedicated to posting/sharing those codes on a network I used to oper. I'm pretty sure the posting of such codes isn't illegal, but of course service theft is. How much do those things cost? :)

I am experienced in programming these cards. they are pretty hard to find nowadays.
they sell for over 250 bucks on fleabay. just do a search for h card.

the hcard is the notorious card that is no longer in production.
and is the only card that can be programmed.
I hope I am not getting too technical.
anyone with questions feel free to pm me.

btw. programming these cards is so much more common than you think.
