Sata2, Sata3 question

So I'm looking to buy one of those 2/3 TB big hard drives and i see the interface mentioned is either Sata2 or Sata3, what does this mean and how do i know if my Sata is 1, 2 or 3 compatible?

I tried using AIDA32 but it doesn't really tell me anything useful.

I should of thought about that, thanks.

From the MoBo manual, it's Sata2:

Sata2 is the 2nd gen interface and Sata3 is the 3rd gen interface.

Sata3 allows higher transfer speeds than Sata2, but IIRC, mechanical HDDs aren't fast enough to take advantage of those higher speeds so it makes little difference.

They are compatible though, you can use a Sata3 HDD in a Sata2 port, and vice versa.
