You *must* first do the 'safely disconnect device' option. If you do not, then you will have corrutption.

All SATA is supposed to support hot swap, it is in the specs.

 
Yes, SATA drives are hot swappable in XP. Just click on the "Safely Remove Hardware" Icon in the quick start menu next to the Clock. It will look like Green Arrow on top of a gray block. All of your SATA drives will be listed in there. Only problem may be figuring out which drive is which, especially if all your disks are the same model since that is how they are displayed (it may also tell you what drive letter is mapped to the device once you click on the "display drive components" option checkbox). Once you deactivate the disk, it is safe to remove.

If you had a complete drive failure, well, it probably will not be listed in that menu and thus may be safe to remove already.
 
I had toyed with the idea of having my second internal drive be a 500GB SATA, and putting a power switch on it, maybe mount the switch on the back. Flip the switch on, do my Acronis backups, flip it off. I don't need a second drive always powered on, and internal is faster than external. I was thinking that I would have to power it on and off before I turned the PC on, but after reading this, could it be turned on and off while windows XP is running? Probably not, since there would not be a way of 'safely disconnect device" Still, I may do it, or just get one of these things..

EDIT: Well, darn., I never noticed that the "safely remove icon" has my main hard drive listed. I guess I can turn a drive on and off while running XP. Hmmm.
 
ive got a sata hdd, and it doesnt show up on the "safely remove" list. is it because its my OS drive?

I agree with xtremeskier97 - it would depend on the controller the SATA drives are hooked up to. I have an Adaptec hotswap SATA card and none of my RAID1 arrays show up in the safely remove hardware option box. I have powered the drives off and pulled them out while XP was up, then put a disk back in, and they automatically began to rebuild.
 
Did anyone grab some of these and how's the response times for them? Do the drives perform the same as if they were mounted normally/internally?
