I have a dispute with a friend over SATA RAID abilities.

Is there any way at all to connect more than 1 sata drive to 1 sata port (on the controller)?

For instance, is there any way at all to to have 2 drives raided using a single port?

-Dan

Also, if theres some kind of documented proof online somewhere that I've missed, it would be extremely helpful as well.

and from this page

Serial ATA specifies a thin, point-to-point connection which allows for easy cable routing within a system. This avoids master/slave, "daisy-chaining", and termination issues.

Now that I think about it, forget the technical documents. Just tell him to find you a picture of a SATA cable that has more than one hard drive connector on it. He'll give up pretty quickly.

Heres his argument, pasted from IRC- nick omited
-----

both my drives are connected together through the thin power power
which is connected to the psu
then the sata thin cable
is connected from one hd to one raid port
then it is setup through bios
with a raid 0 config
and then i format my hardrives
and setup windows

they are different cords
its not a normal psu cable
its a sata power cable
it has 2 thin black plugs
on one coard
and one goes into the power supple
the other 2 black go into the two sata harddrives
and then u just hook ur sata cable into the raid port
and setup frrom there

It just sounds like he's got 2 drives on 1 SATA power cable which is possible, just like with PATA drives.

2 drives on 1 SATA data cable is not possible, but it seems like he's saying that he has 1 SATA data cable for each drive.

thats what i thought, but he insists that theres only one sata cable- from one drive to the controller.

That's all he can have and reading the paste from IRC I'm with Shooters as it seems he has a Y SATA Power adapter for the Drives which I use as well...

so he has a y SATA power adapter, and MUST have 2 SATA cables... 1 for each drive. (just to clarify yet again)
