Ok, So I already installed windows, but in the bios I just noticed that my SATA controller was set to IDE and not AHCI. I'm assuming AHCI is better than IDE.

Now, the question is, can I make the switch in the bios without messing up my windows install? Will my data on it be safe? I don't have time to redo everything I've done...

I can't guarantee that there is any performance benefit in AHCI, however, I highly doubt there would be a problem created in windows by the change. You will, however, need to install the SATA driver (if it isn't already) before you switch modes in the BIOS.

So to answer your question: because the change you're making is the method of accessing the hard drive, and not in the file system structure/etc., it should be perfectly safe to make the switch. If it doesn't work out, you can undoubtedly change back to IDE mode in the BIOS without any repercussions.
