HI

I have a Gigabyte 7vxrp rev 1.1 - can I get a sata pci card that will work in my system? I realize my motherboard doesn't have the 2.3 pci compliant slots, it is using 2.2 pci. I also know that my mobo doesn't have the sata connection on it. I was hoping that I could still upgrade to a SATA drive. I need more HD space heh. I had 160Gb in this rig, till one of the 80's blew. Anway, I hope someone can shed some light on this for me. I have been out of the hardware game for a year-ish.

Thanks!

firstly, what type of sata harddrive are you looking to get? If you're looking looking into a raptor, then the speed difference isn't noticable. Rather than spending money to upgrade your harddrives to sata, spend it to upgrade something esle your system.

Well I only have the one 80Gb drive left. I was looking to get some more space and saw the SATA drives that are available. Are you saying I would be better off getting a 120 or something like that and staying with the ATA 133?

That depends really on your preference. Sata drives wont increase your performance enough to notice. I prefer them mainly due the cable management and the airflow benefits that come along with the small cable. Also the fact that most new mobo's out today are SATA compliant. If your comfortable with your current ATA133 setup, stay with it. However if you want to spend the extra $9 or so on a SATA drive (and of couse the $49 or so for a controller card), then go that route. Good luck.

I would be looking towards SATA because of the new motherboards. It will make upgrading easier later. I just wanted to know if I could use a SATA drive with my system, being that I have 2.2 pci slots. I take it that I can by the responses I've gotten. I have only found 2.3 pci controllers so far. I thought about just getting a 250Gb or something for this rig and putting this 80Gb in my burner/server/etc rig.

Thanks for the replies!
