I'm looking to buy a sata raid card. for now 8 drives will be enough, but I'd like the option of expanding later to more. So far i see a few options, one card supports port multipliers (up to 8 1-4 port multipliers for a possible 32 drives to a single controller. Yeah - I dont see that happening anytime in the near future, 16 drives however is a likely possibility, maybe more.
The other option is a raid card that supports card linking, so two 8 port cards will work.
How do port multipliers work, do they always work? Or does the hard drive also need to support this technology. Does this decrease speeds significantly with 4 drives going over a single sata channel? Speed is not a HUGE issue - but I don't want to sacrifice it if i don't have to.
I tried googling for more info on it but was unsuccessful.
Thanks!
