SATA optical drives; ext. HDD enclosure power

Couple of questions:

1. How common are SATA optical drives (e.g. DVD burners) these days? Can anyone vouch for their reliability? How about the availability of SATA DVD burners at 16x with dual-layer writing capability?

2. Is the such a thing as an external HDD enclosure (Firewire or USB) that does NOT require a separate power source (AC adapter)? That is, all power is derived from the USB/Firewire bus itself?

Thanks.

1. I have no idea
2. Not possible, atleast I don't think :: The harddrive needs a 12v power source.. USB is only 5v.

1. very uncommon and 2. "Self"powered firewire enclosures for laptop HDs exist, but I've never seen one for a desktop drive.
