SATA noob needs help.

How Do i install my new raptor?

I've pluged in the Sata Data & Sata Power cords. Then I unpluged my IDE drives. Put my XP cd in my CDDrive. Go into Bios and boot from CD, then when trying to install XP It tell me I have no harddrive available to install on and to reboot. Is there something I'm missing?

You may have to update your BIOS, and you may heve to press F6 when prompted by the XP install to "install 3rd party drivers" or somesuch from a disk.

 
Take a hard look at the manual for your motherboard. Many have special BIOS settings needed for them to recognize SATA drives without special drivers. If you need drivers, you'll either have to have to read them on a floppy disk or will have to slipstream them into your XP Install CD.

See if your bios supports Sata IDE mode. This will make it unneccessary to install the 3rd party drivers. Otherwise, see the post above.

Make sure the hard drive is being recognized in the BIOS. Set the SATA to enhanced mode if you have the option. Make sure SATA raid is disabled.
 
I have no option of SATA in my bios, I updated, and still no sata option. I'm now trying to get my sata drivers for the controller and trying to install them. Then once I get it reading on disk Management i'll initalize and format. IF that works. But I have no ides what controller I have ( ULI, PRomise, Silicon ) As of right now I'm leaning toward just selling the harddrive. This is to much work for a freaking harddrive.

I'm looking at the PDF version of your owner's manual right now. It looks like you have a soldered-down PCI-based Promise SATAn controller, and also the "native" ones hosted by the motherboard's southbridge.

If you want to read an SATA-for-newbies page, well, click here. That should help with some of the basics.

If you want to try the no-brainer approach first, look in the BIOS under Integrated Peripherals > On-Chip IDE Configuration.

1) Set ATA Configuration to P-ATA + S-ATA

2) Enable the S-ATA Keep Enable option.

3) The other options are as clear as mud 😕 but try setting P-ATA Channel Selection to Secondary and setting CombinedModeOption to S-ATA 1st Channel and see what happens.

4) Make sure the SATA cable is plugged into one of the two SATA jacks that are up by the southbridge, not the ones down lower by the Promise chiplet.

If the drive is now at least recognized at POST, then you're making progress 🙂

Its really not that hard. Simply go to your Mobo's website and download the Sata drivers you need. The drivers need to be installed when prompted at the beginning of your OS install. You will need to install a floppy drive at least long enough to install the operating system. Usually, I do this with the case open ... and when I'm done, I remove the floppy drive from the system since I don't have any other need for one.

Give it a try.

A lot more 'drivers' to choose from then you'd think thats my trouble.
 
If you're using the native Intel SATA plugs and they're not in RAID mode, then it actually ought to emulate regular IDE and not need drivers. Tried my suggestion above yet?

You did a better job of scrounging up that motherboard manual than me. I was having a hard time finding it on the MSI site. I always find MSI's site a bit obscure. It would have helped if the O.P. had listed the MODEL NUMBER of the board. There are lots of Neo boards, and no "NeoV-2" listed.
 
Its actually a neo2-v Sorry. 🙂

I got It working though, Mechbgon you are god. I went into Integrated Peripherals and did the P-ATA + S-ATA and It read the HDD and I installed windows. However, now my two IDE's don't register on DISK Managment.
 
now my games crash when i try and play, video driver issues i'd guess, but catalsyt doesn't seem to help any when I install it.
 
Hmm. If you didn't already, you can install the latest Intel motherboard driver package from here (center column, Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility). It's sort of the "foundation" driver that lets the chipset use the AGP bus properly, among other things, so give that a try if you haven't already.

Also, any chance your power supply is overstressed? Is it a decent-quality 330W one or just so-so quality?
 
Would a weak powersupply cause my game to crash 10seconds into it? other then that everything seems to ok.
