Do I need to install special drivers inorder to use a sata drive if installing windows xp on it??

Yes. The drivers will usually come with your motherboard/adapter card on a floppy disk. If you dont have it, or you lost it, just head over to the manufacturer's site, download it, and stick it on a disk.

will I be promped to install them during the windows installation. I did download something from asus's web site and placed them on a blank floppy

Yes, youll be prompted, but it wont be obvious.

Itll say something like 'Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver' at the bottom of your screen while its doing the initial filecopying off your Windows XP CD. At that point, hit F6, and follow the directions.

you might not have to, i installed windows xp pro sp2 on a Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 last night and it didnt ask for the drivers.

And if you are slipstreaming, you can include the drivers on the CD. This is what I do, as I refuse to acknowledge that floppies exist anymore.

edit:

The drive is not the deciding factor. It is the drive controller.
