I've got this recurring issue with an 80gig SATA drive. A couple of weeks ago I was running two of these puppies in RAID0 when suddenly one decided to report SMART errors. Upon boot, CHKDSK attempted to repair the array, only to have it render the data on the drives completely unusable (could no longer boot XP, etc), so assumably the data was severely corrupted.
At the time, I -was- overclocking, so I had this thought that maybe my memory was giving errors, so I ran memtest through several iterations. It reported no errors. Just in case, I reset everything to stock speeds, ran memtest again, no errors. I decided to leave it at stock at this point.
Figuring it may be a virus, I decided to wipe the drives clean with a complete format. The formats seemed to take, so I set up the drives in RAID1 this time, reinstalled XP, and everything looked great...for a week. Suddenly I'm getting errors again on the same drive, while the other drive seems to be functioning fine.
I'm planning on running Seagate's HD disgnostic utils on the drives tonight in the hopes that it will deal with a RAID1 setup alright (don't know why it wouldn't). Assuming those will pass fine, I'm totally at a loss for what's going on with this drive.
Bad SATA cables?
Power supply failing?
ICH5R chip dying?
There's nothing around the system that could be giving EM interference, so that shouldn't be the case. Unfortunately I don't have another computer with SATA, so I can't swap the drives to another system and test em. Any input would be greatly appreciated!
