SATA DVD Writer Question and Suggestions

I'm looking to get a new DVD Writer. Is a SATA one really worth getting? My current DVD ROM is already ribbon cabled together with my current DVD Writer so I'm going to have a ribbon cable plug dangling there anyway. Is the performance difference noticable or do people just get these for the space saving SATA cables?

I've also narrowed it down to the NEC AD7170 or LiteON LH-20A1-487C. Which would you go for, or are there better drives than those?

I have a SATA DVD writer its sweet😀
No different than a reg. writer IMO. If there's supposed to be some kind of difference i dont notice it.
I personally wouldnt buy a writer from a company thats known for making moniters but thats me.
I would look into a plextor drive, they are the best an will last you forever. I think lite-on is a good "bang for the buck" drive but i hear they are loud

Questionable logic there.

I went from a Sony (rebadged Lite-On AFAIK) to an NEC/Sony Optiarch (joint venture).
Not had any problems with either (The Sony was getting slow, it was only 4x). I can even burn 8x discs at 16x with my NEC and they seem to work.

Personally I'd go for whichever is cheapest and by a reputable manufacturer.

Yes, go for the NEC Optiarc AD7170A then flash it with firmware by Liggy&Dee at the CDFreaks forums. Don't waste your money on Plextor drives. They're not as good as they used to be.

No, there is no performance difference just because of SATA.

New motherboards do not have IDE connectors or have only 1, but have many SATA connectors.
That and the SATA cable blocking less air flow than the ribbon cable are the main reasons for getting SATA optical drives today.

Thanks guys, I wasn't aware IDE connectors had been/were being phased out. It makes sense to get a SATA one then in case I upgrade my computer in the next year. Maybe I'll replace my current DVD ROM for a SATA one too since these optical drives are so cheap now. Out of the above mentioned drives it'll have to be the NEC as the LiteOn is only available in standard IDE at the moment over here.

Cheers.

Are you saying there are issues with the NEC 7170 drives? I would rather not flash any drives if I can.
