SATA drive

You really can't go wrong with Seagate, Maxtor, or Western Digital. The WD might be louder than the others, but the Maxtor is probably the best mix of speed and silence. For all out silence go for either the Maxtor or Seagate, but I really don't have any experience with SATA drives.

Also, why are you so intent on a SATA drive? You can get some nice PATA drives at dirt cheap prices now.

What is quicker the Raptor or Cheetah?
I thought the guy said Raptors were teh fastest, but aren't they only 10k rpms?
vs others that are 15k rpms?

(was that a stupid question?)

someone tell me what i missed

SCSI.

Cheetahs are all SCSI drives, not SATA.

That isn't completely true, the Raptor beats the Cheetah in alot of tests, runs cooler, and has lower CPU usage.

Dumbo, I know that raptor is the fastest SATA and my question was which SATA drive is second (after the RAPTOR)!!

Now, aren't parallels suppose to be faster than serials because they send 8bits streams compared to 1bit streams? How come SATAs are faster than PATAs?

Just curious. =) I dont' know much, but we just covered parallel vs serial in class.

From what I understand about the current trend towards serial interfaces, the benefit comes from not having wait for data to line up in the parallel package before being transferred, and instead it just shoots out whatever is ready as it comes up.

Also, SATA is 150 MB\s max, and PATA is 133 MB\s max. The extra raw speed and possible lower overhead helps too.
