SATA drive won't show with IDE drive plugged in

Hi all,

I used to frequent this forum a loat about 6 years ago, but then I built a computer that did all I needed it to do, and my son also became my IT resource. He is no longer available for me as a resource, do now I am back, but under a new name as my old login didn't work anymore.

Anyway, my issue is as follows:

I have a SATA drive that is the boot drive, and an IDE data drive. My son set this up for me, and it worked fine for a long time, when all of a sudden, the SATA drive will not be recognized in BIOS with the IDE drive plugged in. If I unplug the IDE data drive, the SATA drive works just fine, and boots into Windows every time, but as soon as I plug in the IDE drive, it shows up but not the SATA drive. I just plugged the SATA drive into the 3rd SATA port, and was able to get it recognized in the main BIOS screen, but it still does not show up in the list for Boot priority settings.

Just before all of this occured I had a blue screen, and now the BIOS seems to be confused.

MB = ASUS M3A78-ME
SATA ports = 5
IDE ports = 6

Did you try clearing the CMOS with the jumper? If not, try that. Then, reboot with just the SATA drive connected, and, assuming it shows up in the CMOS, set the boot order.

Then, power down, connect the PATA drive, boot and check the CMOS again to see if everything shows, and recheck the boot order.

Good luck. 🙂

Also, YGPM about regaining access to your original account. 😉

BTW, This PC was upgraded by my son, so I was not completely familiar with the BIOS.

I did go ahead and clear CMOS, and still could not see the SATA drive with the IDE drive plugged in. I did several things, but to no avail. I downloaded the manual for the mother board, and it showed a storage configuration selection on the MAIN menu, that just wasn't there in my BIOS.

Then I went out of the country to the Dominical Republic for a week with my new wife for our honeymoon.

Upon our return, I tried again, and this time I stumbled onto a HARDDRIVE selection in the BOOT page and it allowed me to set which drive is the 1st drive. I set the SATA drive as the 1st drive, and now the SATA drive shows up in the BOOT PRIORITY selection when the IDE drive is plugged in, and the IDE drive does not show up.

I set the SATA drive to boot after the floppy drive, and now all is right again, and all drives show up in Windows as well. It appears that one of the BIOS upgrades changed these selections, but as is commonly the case, the manual was never updated to match. I have recorded this info for future use.
