Sata controller cards?

Anyone have any recommendations for a pcie sata 4-port controller card? I bought a $20 one recently and regret it dearly, copying to a hard drive connected to it resulted in freezes and even some funny noises coming from the hard drive, plugging it into my mobo fixed everything.

Don't do it I have experience. Their cheap and your limited to 4x

It will not be near as fast and stable as onboard SATA ...

Just wait until you get a new motherboard. Its a waiste of money youll see.
 
Nice fine Soulkeeper but ya these cards are all junk IMO and my experience.

Im mean its a pure headache. your better off buying a mobo with 8 sata or something or does that even exist 😕

I already have 8 ports on my mobo, think i've seen one of the asrock boards with 12 ports, now that would be ideal.
 
what kind of mobo do you have with 8 sata3 onboard?
Looking for myself for a solution with at least 3 onboard sata3, but not a marvell etc. (as they are often regarded as bad performing)...
 
The problem was the JMicron chip. VIA are also to be avoided. Silicon Image are generally okay. If do not mind the jump from $50ish to $100ish and especially for serverish reliabilty and compatibility (ZFS, unRAID, disPARITY, SnapRAID, and so on) then the Marvell based Supermicro card is commonly recommended (despite Marvell's reputation for flaky mainboard implementations), as well as LSI based cards -usually OEM versions parted out from servers.

typically additional cards bring performance issues (hopefully they are PCI Express 3.0 or similar), therefore the best idea would be to have onboard solutions. Or is this a wrong thinking?
 
typically software raid blows monkey. an LSI 9260-8i for $130 off ebay is freaking insane fantastic (IBM M5014). It will rock your socks, and for that price get two for redundancy 😉

those cards sold for $600 several months back (9260-8i with bbu)

Oh, let's be sure to mention that Nvidia controllers are garbage while we're at it.

Again, the SiI may be useful but if considering unRAID then it's really necessary to confirm compatibility and reliability. However, since that implies a certain investment in time and cost, trying to save $50 on the heart of the system is prolly folly.
