curious more than anything else. normal sata setup i mean, not "optimized for quick removal" or such
 
after this thread, i realised that it was for unlocking dvd writers i wanted to do this.

that needs to be powered off, nothing else fixes it. going to assume yanking the power cable out wouldn't be ideal 😀
 
The SATA power and data connectors are fully hot-pluggable. Moreover, if you have the SATA controller set to AHCI mode, the OS will fully support it as well.
 
so you're saying that if my dvd writer locks for whatever reason, then i could yank out the power cable from the drive and reconnect it? if that worked, would windows see the drive again?
 
Yes, and yes. Really no different than if you turn the power switch off and then on on an external DVD drive. Common sense says give it a minute or two between unplug and plug so the system gets used to it.
