Anyone ever tried something like this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16817121405
?

I'm going to be building a windows home server machine and want the hot swap ability for hard drives so i can add/replace drives easily. I really don't see using this for RAID but who knows in the future. How easy are these things to fit in most cases? I just have an antec midtower. I really wanted an external unit that has esata but i found them to be very expensive. I am initially looking at supermicro because of my confidence with the brand. When i looked at the pictures of the back of this unit i didn't see any sata connections. How does that exactly work? Is there one connection per backplane or 1 connection per drive? Do you have to worry whether the backplane is compatible with Sata I or Sata II or is that just dependent on the drive? Any help would be appreciated.

thanks,
Ncage

This is Not a network Device it is a SATA enclosure.

If by windows home server you mean that the OS would be Microsoft Windows Home Server, I do not think that it would support the Hot Swap part.

Actually i'm pretty sure the hot swap will work. Windows home server is really Windows server 2003 buisness server. Just as long as the sata controller your using supports hot swap. Also look at the hp windows home server unit. They have hot swap hard drives. Yes i realize this is not a standalone device. You have to fit it in 3-5.25 slots in your case but since this type of thing (scsi/sata backplanes) are most often discussed with networking technology is why i asked the question here.

I have two of these, one in my 23-bay double wide server case, and another in my gaming machine (Lian Li G70b case). There are five SATA connectors on the rear of the unit underneath the fan. There is one connection per drive, which goes to the backplace that then connects to the drive. Since SATA 1 & 2 have the same connection, the backplane doesn't care in the least. It leaves stuff like that to your drive and the SATA controller.

pic of 2 enclosures installed in my 23-bay case

older pic of my current rig; definitely needs to be updated.

ncage Check carefully the WHS issue while it is a subset of Windows 2003 the way it handles Hard Drives is different.
