Hey guys, am new to the forums so hows everyone doing?

Anyway i wish i had found this sight a few weeks ago as i was having trouble installing Windows XP pro on my SATA HD.

Heres the story. I had a new computer built. The specs are as follows

AMD 64 3200+

Gigabyte k8 Triton series GA-K8NS Pro with an nforce 250 chipset

1 gig pc3200 400mhz DDR

80 gig SATA HD

Nvidia gforce 6800 GT

Now heres my problem. Apperently i have to create my own floppy to install the SCSI drivers for my SATA HD.
So i took my wifes computer and copied the files from the disk that had all the drivers on it and then copied it to a floppy. When i press F6 and go through the install process everything works fine. I get to the point where it reads the files off the floppy for Windows XP but when it goes to install them it says unable to install. I tried downloading the files from a specific website, i had tech support email the files to my wifes computer, but everytime it said the files couldn't be installed. Is this a common problem? Tech support said it could be a problem with the motherboard. I certainly hope not since its brand new.

Funny thing is i installed a copy of windows 2000 pro without any problems, just can't get xp installed.

Anyway i guess it doesn't really matter since i sent the HD back to exchange it for a 120 gig ultra ata. But i'm currious about a solution since its been bugging me.

See if there are any bios or firmware updates for your mobo or SATA controller.

What's the exact error you're getting when it says the files couldn't be installed? Is it having trouble finding oemsetup.inf or something? The drivers diskette you are using should have and oemsetup.inf in the root of it and then a .sys file either in the root or in a folder specified in the .inf file.

Let me know what the exact error is. It's likely either unable to find the .inf or it's finding the .inf fine but then is looking in the wrong place for the .sys. The error message will indicate which one. If none of the above then it's either a driver that's incompatible with your controller's firmware level or you got bunk hardware.

it says it can't install any of the files. It gives me the option to skip so i skip to the next file and that won't install either, the process continues for all the files. I tell ya tech support is stumped.

I don't know if this makes a difference but my friend gave me a copy of xp pro so its not an original. Would that make a difference?

It makes a difference to me.

Seeing as I work for Microsoft this is now the end of the help you get from me with your copied XP Pro.

Welcome to Anandtech btw.
