SATA and IDE drive conflicting?!? please help

hello i just built a computer for my buddy, all he kept was his 160gb ide hdd and video card from his old comp. he wanted antoher hard drive and i got him a sata since the new motherboard supports sata and it was cheaper then ide version... now i am fairly new to sata but i thought i had this figured out...
i installed windows with only the sata and dvd rom drive hooked up, everytrhing went fine and windows installed and ran fine. i now try to put in the ide hdd after i formatted it on my computer and the computer wont boot at all! it seems like windows isnt even trying to boot from the sata and goes straight to trying to boot from the ide one which doesnt have windows on it. now i set up in bios the hdd order with the sata one on top so its not the wrong order... ive tried putting the ide hdd on ide primary master and slave and also on the ide secondary channel as master and slave too to no avail. i am stumped.. please help me. the motherboard is MSI neo2 platinum bye the way

thanks for your time and sorry for the bad grammar!!!

Mike

did you just set it to HDD 0, or to SCSI? on my one it only works when I set it to SCSI, not same mobo, btw

yeah i heard people been setting as scsi and it works, but my mobo doesnt have the scsi option 🙁 i just emailed MSI maybe they can figure this out.

In the advanced BIOS features section, what do you have for hard disk boot priority?
in this order it is

the sata drive
the ide drive
nvidia add ons or something like that

does it actually say 'the sata drive' or does it say 'hdd 0' or something like that? what is the actual list in the bios?

im not on his computer right now but i am 99% sure it said

hdd 2 MaxtorSATADRIVEMODEL
hdd 1 SEGATEIDEDRIVEMODEL
nvidia add ons

maybe you could try not having the IDE drive in the boot list at all, just have the SATA drive. Also, pressing F8 ( i think ) during booting brings up the boot menu, and you should just be able to select the SATA drive from the list

In the BIOS go tthe the Integrated Peripherals then to On-Chip IDE Configuration -- I'm not sure exactly what the configuration should be but that is the place to start exerimenting.

how do u get it out of the boot list? i dont see any way how, doesnt list a remove control... this is an odd, very simple bios compared to others i used

a guy on sharky forums helped me get it to work, this is what fixed it for your knowledge...

"hook it as Primary Master on IDE0 and set the jumpers accordingly (are you sure you are physically changing the jumper shunt located on the back of the drive?)..set the BIOS to OFF for all but PriMast on IDE0, and AUTO on PriMast IDE0"

worked right away. im so glad its fixed, was losing sleep due to staying up late on net looking for fix, thanks all in this thread who helped i really appreciate it!
