So far what ive read about DDR2 suggests there is no difference over the original DDR. So is there a difference in performance with a SATA 2 mobo and a hard drive that supports SATA 2? The Maxtor Maxline 3 and the new Nforce 4 boards all support the new SATA 2. But does the jump from 1.5gb/ps to 3.0gb/ps make a big difference? Iam thinking of going this route so any help would be much appreciated.

i'm not sure personally whether it will help or not. but i think that it'll be another one of those 'real-life' differences vs. benchmark differences. also probably depends on the applications you are using. some may benefit from 3.0gb/s over 1.5gb/s, and some may not. overall i do think it will be an improvement and is worth the upgrade if you got the money to do so. there could be possible increases in speed though, but I haven't yet to use it myself.

SATA 2 is mainly a features upgrade to what SATA 1 should have been. SATA requires NCQ support, and adds port expander capabilities, an external spec, and drive compatibility with SAS controllers. The speed bump will not have any affect on single drive setups.

couple questions:

1. does the 74gb raptor have NCQ capabilities? I thought I read on this forums before that it did, but I may have been mistaken.

2. Sata cables have not changed from sata 1 to sata 2 correct? Same cables work for both?

If the hard drive can not read the data any faster than the IDE speed what is the big deal??

The Raptor supports the antiquated P-ATA TCQ, not NCQ. Yes, the cables are the same, except for the addition of a new external cable spec for SATA II.
