I don't know the ins and outs but why can't you buy directly from Direct TV? Because some local place bought franchise right to the area?

That would be Pegasus. Pegasus has rights in certain areas and DirecTV is under contract not to have any of their installers go out and do install nor can they provide you service at your address if this is the case. If it is the case then Pegasus is the only way you can get DirecTV (they basically use one of DirecTV's satellites & programming) and you will end up paying more for it as well.

As far as I know, if you have a good line of sight, you should be able to get anything you want. Except for local channels that are spot beamed.

yeah that weems to be it, cost an extra $5 a month for the same stuff, and they don't offer the same specials that dtv does either. what a PITA!:(
