Mine came in the mail too. I never understood people freaking out about their scores or taking the test multiple times. I remember one girl breaking down and crying because she got a 32 on her ACT the first time and not a 34 like her older sisters got. :roll: I wonder if she still thinks it's that important 8 years later.

A slightly better score can save you lots of money on tuition. That can matter alot when your dealing with $10,000 less debt than otherwise.

The "teaching" you have done is helpful in that it gets your brain more used to doing problems that one would see on the test, it is not teaching you highschool classroom material. Of course taking a practice will help, this is common sense, and many times is shortchanging your brain brains ability to answer problems by instead using worthless tricks that apply only to the SAT.

Then how is the SAT a measure of intelligence if it's so easily circumvented by "less intelligent" people using "tricks"?

Because the bonus points you can earn by going to class add onto a base score you are getting because of intelligence. A realy smart kid, and a rich noob who both take a prep class may both get 50 extra points, but the smart kid will go from a 1450 to a 1500 and the noob from an 1100 to an 1150....
Hell the smart kid will probably utilize the class more effectively and get more point. I scored a 1400 at the end of sophmore year so after having had a first look at it was able to get familiarized and boost myself 130 points.

In the end the SAT is a gift, can get you great scholarhsips, get you into schools that would not have been able to pick you out based on your grades, and can even help enhance your resume. A good friend of mine was a Nation Merit Scholar and got a full ride plus 10k a year stipend to attend Texas @ Dallas which he chose over Ivy League Columbia because of 3 hours of #2 penciling. A great deal in my mind

People who started out in lower brackets had noticeably greater increases in scores than the people who were already relatively high. In general, after a good amount of practice, ALL people regardless of n00b or genius gets around a 1450-1550 after taking princeton review. By that point on the bellcurve, one problem = 30 points difference, so we see a great amount of fluctuation in that upper range, which can take place even among the same person taking the exam several times.

I honestly don't understand how people get below a 1100. I scored a 1200 in the 7th grade. Sure some problems involve actual basic math skills and vocab knowledge, but 70% of it is stuff you should know regardless of your grades or school ability.

the national average is still like 1030

the reason peopel score below 1100 is because
1) they arnt as smart as you
2) schools are different thety dont all teach teh same thing
3) some people are horrid test takers

My friend Brett graduated 4th in our college class with a GPA of like 3.95 (physics Major) and he got a 1050 on his SATs

our college didnt require SATs on the admission form because they dont use them in anyway to determin admission, submitting them is compleatly optional

I disagree, I think the SAT is a strong indicator of ones raw brain power. Thus the reason why some of my genius friends scored 1570+ while other friends scored in the 1300's when both take the same classes and get the same grades.

Your friend Brett might do well in school, but if after multiple attempts at the SAT he can only muster a 1050 this would be a fair indicator that he has a strong work ethic, but uses things other than ability alone to learn and apply knowledge. The other problem might be that as a physics major he was decent on the math portion, but struggled heavily in reading comprehension and English.
In conclusion, if you have any ability, or even the patience to do a few practice tests and prep books, the SAT is a gift. Get a good score and your 3 hours of bubble filling can help you just as much as the 3 semester of English you suffered through.

SAT correlates to how well students do the FIRST YEAR in college, nothing more.

good luck, but remember that gpa is overall much more important for colleges than the SAT. i.e. the sat will not save you from a low gpa, while high gpa outweighs a low sat score.

and also, don't sleep the night before the test. first time i took it i did the whole sleep at 8pm, have a nice big breakfast etc etc and ended up with 1430, next time i took it i was online all night and just had a coffee in the morning and my score went up >100pts.


oh and come to CMU! i somehow got in with a crappy 3.3 gpa, you can too!

you see, i'd really like to think this is true except for the fact that I scored a 1230 the first time I took the SAT's, and after a good 2 years of Princeton Review, raised up my score past 1450. The SAT prep classes raise scores by telling students "DONT FILL IN ANSWERS IF YOU DONT KNOW IT!!" and how to "maximize" your score.

When it comes to top scores, the SAT is very telling, because there is no other way to "maximize' your score than to answer every problem, and correctly to boot. So while there may be an SAT skew in the 1300-1500 range, the 1500+ is definitely not "teachable".

You can't learn years of critical thinking in math (although math section was a joke), and years of literature and critical reading skills (verbal was a joke too..) in half a year leading up to the SAT...

btw, I got a 1540. (first time taking it, no prep)

Ok... i got my scores.... im not sure how to figure out the total because
1. The new SAT
2. I heard something about them ditching the writing portion

However:

Math 530
Critical Reading 560
Writing 540
Multiple Choice 55 (score range: 20-80)
Essay 7 (score range: 2-12)

Not too good, no excuse really but i wasn't feeling good. However if they drop the writing that isn't good either, Im pretty sure they do something to the score however.

At any rate im taking it again in May, then again in June (ie as many times as i can).

As for colleges, I do really want to go to Tech, but UVA is a good alternative i would think. According to collegeboard IIRC my math scores are in range (barely), and my crit reading scores are a little below. Well, ill bring it up next time.

The new SAT is calculated almost the same way as the old SAT. It is now out of 2400. It is simply the Old SAT + SAT II: Writing = New SAT.

So judging from your score, it would be math + verbal + writing for a total of 1630. So if you only added Verbal + Math, then your old SAT score would have been 1090

my calc teacher from HS told us that he got a 1610 on his SAT back when he took it because he took it in the first couple years and there was extra credit...

as for me, when i heard they were changing the GRE to include an essay portion and do away with the reasoning portion, i signed up for the last test date with the old test, and over the course of a month, studied the GRE wordlist with my gf every night instead of going out and having fun. => 760 GRE verbal (99th %ile for physical science applicants)

i did pretty well on the SAT back in the day, does anybody have more experience with correlation between their SAT and GRE scores?

all that said, SAT/GRE is BS; it's a total freebie to people like me who are good at standardized tests / multiple choice tests, and it's a freaking nightmare and self-esteem killer for people who aren't. i'd say that i hope ETS gets rid of it, but come on. "hey i know, let's put ourselves out of business a durr!!"

Ah well, im good at writing essays, not so much under time constraints. I only had about 3 paragraphs on that score (didn't do last paragraph or conclusion) and i still managed a 7.

Virginia public schools are in the middle of a massive budget crunch. Class sizes are growing, classes are cut, professors are released or leaving for better-funded private sector schools, and more prestigious ones at that. If you have the money to consider applying for out-of-state schools look at private universities because the quality of education in Virginia is quickly dropping.

I recommend the Princeton Review's books. I don't know if they've been updated for the new test, but they had a number of useful tips when I took the test many moons ago.
