I'm new to internal RAID HBAs and connecting them to SAS enclosures. My question is that if my RAID card dies, do I lose my data? I'm planning on building a 8 drive RAID 5 with a yet to be determined Areca card. I'm sure I can contact Areca, but you guys are more fun.

If you're setting up hardware raid you should really get the same card twice, same revision same firmware. Keep one as a backup.

Personally i'd go Freenas or other nas solution with ZFS on running in software raid. You can still use sas. Just get a cheaper compatible card.
