SARS Question

There's been alot of news about SARS, but the one thing I have not heard about is whether or not anyone has recovered from SARS. I would think that should be on everyone's minds. I for one want to know if anyone has recovered so I'll know that if I caught it, I still have a chance. I've read the FAQ on SARS on ABCnews.go.com, but this question was not listed as a FAQ. I couldn't find any link that would allow me to ask them a question about SARS so I don't know where they're getting their FAQ from.

Anyone here heard about anyone recovering from this epidemic?

Yes, they have. Only 4% of the people who've caught it have died..

Could you point me to a link that states this? Do you know of anyone who has recovered? I would think it would make great news.

Death rate is about 3.5%... and most of them are the elderly.

Why? 96% of people recover just fine. It's the deaths that is the anamoly.

If 96% actually recovered, why is it an epidemic? Sounds like getting the flu would be just as damaging. I don't think 96% actually recovered, gotta be more to it.

Do the math yourself. 79 deaths, 2200 infected = 3.5%

You're saying other 2121 will recover? They're infected so will they eventually die or will they recover? That's the question.

Illness only lasts about 10 days.

Okay, thanks. Glad to hear some good news.

I have also seen the 3.5%-4% mortality rate being publicized. The reason it's different from the flu is because many more people with SARS need to be hospitalized, put on breathing machines, etc. Most people with the flu are really sick, but don't need hospital care.

I read somewhere that West Nile Virus infection has TWICE the mortality rate as SARS (ie, about 7-8% West Nile vs 3.5-4% for SARS).

The death reat is very low and most of the people that die are old. with sars some of the anti-viral drugs are doing a good job of getting rid of symptoms and shorting the time the disease infects the person.

3.5% seems rather low, until you consider that if left unchecked some 10ish million Americans(US) would die. SARS is very serious.

Yes but I think SARS is more worrisome because West Nile is spread mostly by mosquitoe bites while SARS seems to spread through the air and hence much more contagious.

The mortality rate might be relatively low but the ease of spreading the infection makes it a serious health threat. It spreads as easily as the cold or flu. If a million people catch it, then that will mean 35,000 people will die.
