If it's in HongKong or China, it'll be in CA in a couple days at the most.

btw, if you got AIDS your survival rate is much better than then SARS. (at least you won't drop dead within few weeks).

and if you don't do drug and don't fvck around unprotected, your chance to get AIDS is near impossible(unless you has AIDS from your mom), why do we got so many AIDS problem??

and one more thing, there are not many place can provide despense oxygen to gernal public, how many ICU beds do you thing city like HK had? not enough for 0.1% of its people. and China? I dont' even want to think about it.

A 90% survival rate is high but when combined with the fact that SARS seems to spread as easily as the common cold is cause for real concern (who hasn't caught a cold?). Let's say 50% of the US population catches SARS. That's about 125 million people. 10% of those will die -- that means about 12 million deaths.

Here is what I read so far from HK, Taiwan, and Google. (wish got something from China but...none)
the SARS is not as deadly as TB, most peopel will recover within few days (4-7 days) with or without medical treatment.
about 10% or SARS will develop into serius problem, and most of them will recover if treated early.
if you look up CDC's stac. out of 1500+ cases about 50+ of them die. so what we got is about 2.5+-%. is that a problem? I don't konw, depands on how lucky you think you are.
I think the the rate will go down to less than 0.1% due to more peopel are aware of it. (IMO, everyone know about flu, so what?)
should you worry about hit by it? DO YOU FELL LUCKY? 😉

Although the chance of catching SARS is very low (for now), its still pretty scary. I'm in Singapore right now, and SARS is on TV, radio and news paper every day. Most people here are more concerned with SARS than the Iraq situation. (!!)

All schools are closed for this week, and they are considering closure for longer time, cos a boy was found with SARS yesterday. The boy caught it while traveling to china and hk, and he went to school before he fell sick. Also, singapore is a pretty crowded island, I hope the disease will be contained. Brr...

Yea, but I've a china trip planned for this summer, in 1.5 months :/ I'm spending alot for this trip and if i cancle now, will loose probably ticket costs as well and not be able to travel there at least for another 10 years or so 🙁 I really hope it isn't that bad. I'm still debating if I should cancel or not. Gotta keep an eye on this thing.

I'm not scared, and I'd be part that 3.5%.
The last time I had a cold it lasted four 4 months (I was lucky it didn't progress to something worse like bronchitis), and I'm currently going on a month with a current sinus infection. I'm worried that my current health will cause me to fail my classes, but I it's not like you could do anything if it were to kill you.

The SARS situation, which is rapidly evolving, is under constant assessment by WHO in collaboration with three global networks of experts. The new advice is issued as part of a series of measures that will change as more information about SARS becomes available.



If you have to go to those area within near future, DO YOU FEEL LUCKY?!
if you already book the trip, depands on your travel agency, you may able to get a refund for your trip.

I would avoid travel to Thailand, Viet Nam as well. I don't think their number are really up to date.
If place like HK which has much more advanced medical hospitals got 700+ case, how could the number from Chian is so low (1190)???

Here an a new update from WHO site as of 4/19/03

Look like WHO is sure that Coronavirus family was the cause for SARS, this is brand new virus never seen before in humen. and the virus are mutate frequently.
Which means, the drug is getting less and less effective to fight virus. and the death rate is more than 5% now (182/3547=5.1%). HK is reporting 12 death yesterday!! Highest number so far. Amoy Garden's cases are example.

According to Times, there are way more cases in China than what have been reported so far. if HK get this many case with its advanced medical centers, one must wondering why China don't have more case than its reporting so far.

SARS is actually 2 viruses, the combination of the coronavirus which causes common cold & fever, and a virus which causes measles & bumps. Secondly, the disease can be carried through the air by sneezes and coughs (aerosol), therefore a mask can help to prevent inhalation of the virus. The virus can survive in open air for 3 hours, and can be transmitted through contact by hand with contaminated objects and surfaces (e.g. elevator buttons).

N95 spec masks can stop objects up to 0.1 micron, particles 1/10th the size of both Anthrax (4-10 Microns in length & 1-1.5 Microns in width) and Tuberculosis (1-5 Microns in length) at a 99% level of efficiency. Masks prevent carriers from spreading the disease, and people from inhaling the virus.

I'm not sure if this has already been mentioned but in the interest of keeping things in perspective you guys should know that more people die from the flu (several times more if I remember right) every month than the number of sars related deaths so far. Who here is afraid of the flu? Just another little thing blown way out of proportion if you ask me. West nile being the perfect example.

If if if. If my aunt had a package she'd be my uncle. But we're not talking if's here. I'm not underestimating SARS. I don't underestimate ebola either but I'm not real worried about it because the number of people that die from it yearly is relatively low. I really don't see the point in comparing "if's" to facts. SARS isn't something that really warrants the fear it's causing imo. Sure it's a bit more serious in it's death rate than the flu but it doesn't spread as easily now does it? So it would seem it kind of evens out to me.

flu (or west nile) has been around for a long time, and we know how to take care of it. SARS is totally new, no one knows about to treat it. you can't compare apple to orange. they are totally different!!!

Yes, flu kills more people than SARS, but how many people got flu per year? the death rate for flu is way lower than SARS (0.004%?), SARS which is at now 5% right now and still increase (don't count China's under report case).

tens of thousands people die in car/air crash, but we still use them everyday, be cause we know the percentage to die from those crash is very very small, just like flu.

Now, if you take a trip and you know there are 5% chance you will die, will you take it?

actually this is a new virus. the chinese government just said this was an old syphilis virus that has been around. They did not want China to have headlines and have people stay away or whatever the reason for them not acknowledging this new disease. A hong kong dr was called in to see what was going on. why were all these people dying from flu-like symptoms. and when asked about it. they did not give him any results or answers. When the dr went back to Hong Kong, he infected a few of his patients then eventually died himself. Yet still... the chinese government denied that there is a possible new virus. Untill it hit in Europe. Thats when a medical ascociation prompted an investigation. Now we have SARS.
