Sarah McLachlan's $150,000 music video

The more we take the less we become
The fortune of one man means less for some

I love Sarah McLachlan, but I disagree with this lyric in particular. For example, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has donated enormous sums of money to philanthropic causes around the world, because of this man's fortune this money gets distributed to charitable causes around the world. Just one example. 🙂

Bill's donations represent a scant amount of his wealth. In a world of finite resources the overall statement is accurate enough...

Eh, whether you agree with the political message or not, it's still nice to see someone donating money to a worthy cause.

I disagree with that statement as well. So if a guy earns well because he's good at what he does should he feel guilty because he's taking away from someone else?

Would be nice if more people did this. Would be cool if the AT forums had a fundraiser or something to help causes like fighting starvation. Like maybe in the freebies section, if you get something that would normally cost more than a couple of dollars, you could donate some of the cash you would have spent to a worthy cause.

I've heard that he is going to give 95% of it to charity eventually.

Philosophically... yes. In reality, we are too far away from any of these problems to care, so no.

The more influence we have on these 3rd world nations, the more of their culture they lose. Their existance may be bleak, but at least they don't have to work 8-5 in a grey cubicle.

i liked the video, it's def a good idea and at least somewhat different. though how much of her own lyrics does she really believe? because i am sure it wasn't her $150k donated it prob came from the usual sources ie. record label etc, and she says "the fortune of one means less for some" well her fortune is a lot greater than mine and a lot of others =p is she gonna give it all or even most away? nah
but still cool idea 🙂

If I'm not mistaken the artists have to pay for their own videos.

So you're saying if you had a choice, you'd choose to starve yourself to death rather than work in a "grey cubicle"?

Sarah rocks ... and although this might seem like a self-promotion measure to some, she does a lot of charity work and donates a lot of money herself.

Money does not disappear when spent. Just because 150,000 is spent on a video does not mean it wont find it's way to charity sooner or later.

It is our very success that leads to our ability to be charitable. How charitable can a poor country be? How charitable can someone living in poverty be?

She's being very simplistic and myopic.

She's also being very hypocritical. I'll bet she has a net worth in the millions and lives a very exclusive lifestyle.

Folks, if you ever hear the term "White Liberal Guilt" you can now use this video as an example.

Thats the same as to me giving 50 cents to a bum on the street.
