Sapphire X1800XT 512mb vs Evga 7900 GT CO 256mb

Hi,

My friend was looking for a new video card for his new computer but i cant figure out which card is faster the X1800XT 512 or the 7900 GT
Does anyone know which one is faster?

This has been debated multiple times and either choice is good but I'd go with the X1800 for angle independant AF, HDR+AA and AVIVO. The GT has a loud cooling solution but it is cooler and draws less power. Performance should be about the same but if your friend is going to add another card down the line the GT is a better choice with SLI.

if noise isn't an issue then then the 1800XT I would say. To tell you the truth though I can barely hear my 1900XT at idle... I sure can here it at full load though lol.

In terms of raw speed, go with the 7900GT CO but in terms of greater IQ and a larger feature set, go with the X1800XT but it will use up way more power and is loud.

Though at $349, that's a heck of a deal on a 512MB X1800XT . . .

That 512MB framebuffer does seem to help in games such as HL2, F.E.A.R., and BF2 though (or other games that would otherwise use up a lot of system ram; even if it doesn't improve FPS much, it would definitely get rid of a lot of stuttering . . .) and I would imagine it would be future proof as well . . .

If the EVGA version is 550/1580, it should be faster for the most part. Personally, I'd get $289 X1800XT. It costs $70 less than EVGA overclocked card. Otherwise, just pick up a plain 7900GT for $300 and overclock it. Without major overclocking to 540/1600 on 7900GT, X1800XT will be faster buy 10-15%.

WTF?

Yeah, I just noticed that too.

I was looking through his specs in his sig, drooling over them, and then was like 1.86Ghz, that doesn't add up.

JBT, you tease. I read the FS/FT want something in my rig?, and then click on the link and its your old rig.

I just bought a dell 2405 and I'm haveing the same debate as the poster. Will haveing that 512 frame buffer make a huge change for games at 1920 x 1200?

it looks like while the extra 256mb doesn't do diddly for lower end cards (dunno why they keep insisting on adding it to low end stuff), it does tend to help high end gpu's.

here's some benchmarks containing both 512mb & 256mb versions of x1800xt. it uses an older set of catalyst driver, and it's in german, but the benchmarks are easily read.
