Does gpu coin mining make use much of large video ram as opposed to smaller video ram?

Love that color scheme

8gigs is overkill, so is 3 fans, so is the 290x.

We need fully active DP, reportedly 1/2 for Hawaii, and they can sell it for a grand as a Titan Black killer.

You don't need that much RAM for any gaming right now, not even on 4K.

My guess is that they felt that they just needed to check off a box on a spec sheet.
Also, they probably could position the card as a compute card to Titan.

But for gamers, the card is completely unnecessary.

YEP! Do want this. Seeing how larger resolutions are on the rise, and modded Skyrim uses 3+ GB now, 4GB most likely won't be enough after a year or two.

PS - would be quite the leap in VRAM from my 1GB 5870ies. :D

OK so if you can theoretically calculate what kind of staggering load would require 8 GB of video ram, could you then correlate that with a theoretical GPU computing load?

What I mean, is that if you could ever use all 8 GB of video ram, would that correspond to using something like 5 of these in crossfire - meaning it's just impossible to ever need that much video ram?

I mean, I know for the 7850 video card, you'd choose the 2 GB version to be better equipped for crossfiring 2 cards and using all that ram. But for 8 GB, you can't crossfire enough of these 290X cards to ever use all that video ram right?

Seems you'd just hit the wall as far as GPU horsepower, being GPU bottlenecked long before you'd ever use all that 8 GB.

Why not make a solid copper heatsink or something more useful than a bunch of ram that will never get used?

The point of 8gb on this card is that it has more than 4gb. The only way, I say that loosely, for them to put more than 4gb on the card was to put 8.

That will also be 8GB of memory with slower timings and probably less overclocking headroom than the 4GB model.

I agree, 8 gigs is overkill. However, you can never have enough cooling on any AMD GPU, let alone a 290x.

Does gpu coin mining make use much of large video ram as opposed to smaller video ram?

Does not make a difference at all for scrypt mining. RAM speeds and timings make much more of a difference though and if this card has 8 gigs, it could have slower RAM than the 4 gig version so it could actually be worse for mining.

Tri-X version is 1040Mhz clock and is already at $600 MSRP and $750+ Inflated Price.

Any custom 780Ti that runs at 1100Mhz+ can beat easily any 290x that you find today on the market. Custom 780Tis start at $710.

If this card ends pricier or close to 780Ti price, no gamer will buy it.

You've gotta be trolling/joking.

Most games don't even use 3GB as of now except for Skyrim with mods. Next Gen consoles/games are already out and as we can all see, the hardware behind them is clearly showing that we aren't going to see a large leap in graphics anytime soon.

You expect the amount of ram used in games to MORE than double in 2 years?

You could probably get a 780Ti (which will most likely outperform this card in majority of games) now, and get a card that VASTLY outperforms the 780Ti 2 years down the road, for less cost than a 8GB Ram version of the R9 290X. But if throwing money away is your hobby, by all means get the R9 290x with 8GB of ram you'll never utilize.
